Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has endorsed San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan as her successor in Congress.

The endorsement of the 20-term congresswoman and the first woman to serve as speaker of the House of Representatives represents an unexpected twist in the three-way Democratic race for San Francisco’s next congressional representative. Pelosi announced last November that he would rather retire than seek re-election.

“I know this district, I know Congress, and I know Connie,” Pelosi said in a brief clip from a video provided by her team, in which she appears seated next to Chan. “I am proud to support Connie Chan and ask you to join me in electing her to Congress.”

The full backup video was released Tuesday morning.

According to recent studies , State Senator Scott Wiener leads the race by double digits. Chan is very much on par with tech entrepreneur and former senior congressional adviser Saikat Chakraborty, who financed much of her campaign with his own money. Former Republican Marie Huriabel is also running.

In the release, the former House speaker pointed to Chan’s leadership as supervisor and chairman of the Board of Supervisors’ budget committee as evidence that she will fight “tirelessly” to “strengthen our safety net and protect our rights.”

Pelosi’s endorsement is somewhat surprising since the former speaker of the House of Representatives has indicated that he will not support either candidate in the chaotic gubernatorial race, although she was seen at fundraising events for Chan and appeared to be lending unofficial support. It also represents a public rebuke to Wiener, who He had previously called Pelosi his “heroine.”

“I have tremendous respect for Speaker Emeritus Pelosi and deep gratitude for all she has done for our city and our country. Whoever wins in November will have a big challenge ahead of them,” Wiener said in a statement.

Pelosi praised Chan as “a mother who knows her power and knows what her ‘why’ is” and said she also brought valuable lived experience as an Asian American immigrant.

“Connie’s story reflects the American dream: the hopes and courage of so many families who came to this country believing in opportunity, dignity and democracy.”
