Cash App launches tap-to-pay for cardholders

Cash App has introduced a new pearl wand you can use to pay for things — but it won’t fulfill your desires for sneakers or free coffee.

A limited run of Cash App Wand is available for in-app purchase to eligible customers ages 13 and older. In a statement, Thomas Templeton, hardware lead at Cash App owner Block, said the wand is one of “virtually unlimited” designs and a starting point for Cash App brands.

“From clothing to jewelry, almost any item can become a means of payment using this technology,” Templeton said. “We look forward to hearing what our customers want to see next.”

Cash App said in a press release that it will offer more limited runs of Cash App Tag designs to Cash App Card holders in the coming weeks. Shoppers who purchase a tag can activate it by linking their tag to their Cash App card in the mobile app. With the tag activated, they can tap to pay without having to reach for their phone or card.

Cash App tags work anywhere Visa Tap-to-Pay is accepted and operate in the same way as a Cash App Card, according to the company. Tag owners can deactivate them at any time within the app, and the tags come with “built-in security features including real-time transaction alerts, 24/7 fraud monitoring, and the ability to instantly lock and unlock the tag within the app.”
