For smaller releases, including LPs from mid-sized independent labels (Drag City, Kranky, Superior Viaduct), visit Mid-Heaven Mail Order. This site is operated by San Francisco-based distributor Revolver USA, which sells to record stores throughout the United States but also sells directly to consumers. Here you’ll find a wealth of indie music, including selected reissues from bigger names like Devo, Sonic Youth and The Fall.

Another great independent record store is Amoeba Music, which is known for its amazing selection in many California stores, and its record store What’s in your bag? YouTube series. Record labels such as Throwing stones, Sub pop, Secret group, Fat possum, Raw trade, Daptone, Blue note, International anthemand Hundreds of others They all have websites and sell records directly. If you notice that there is an artist you would like to sign to a smaller label, there is a good chance that other artists on the label have a similar vibe.

Start by reviewing the notes on the back of all your albums to find out who created them, then follow these labels on the web. You’ll likely find some great new tunes on vinyl along the way.

Direct from the artists

We’ve saved the best for last. Pay artists for their work by putting cash — or a Venmo transaction — directly into their hands. Buying a record from the merch table when an artist plays in your city is not only convenient for you (there’s no shipping, and you typically won’t be charged taxes), but it’s one of the biggest sources of income for bands on tour. You can often find special editions, special colored vinyl variants, and even unreleased recordings just by stopping by the merchandise table. And if you’re lucky enough to meet the artist at the venue, they’ll usually sign your recording jacket for you.

If you don’t go out much (we know concerts are expensive), just find their website, social media page or record label and place an order. I have at least some records with personal thanks and signatures from younger artists, which sounds really special every time I listen to them!
