Welcome to beginners Pack, a gear-obsessed series that gives WIRED readers a peek into how notable figures live, shop, and tinker.
If you’ve ever taken a Peloton ride, chances are Jess King has been pushing you along the way. She was one of the fitness platform’s first trainers, and still presents for the company during its renaissance today. (Peloton recently upgraded its entire line of machines and launched A new fitness service powered by artificial intelligence.)
King never intended to become one of Peloton’s most popular instructors. Before connecting with millions of riders, King was a professional dancer, leading Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas and competing in So you think you can dance. She had never touched a spin bike until a producer encouraged her to try it.
Raised in Myrtle Beach by her Chilean mother, Ximena Bernales — a fitness legend who went from aerobics instructor to bodybuilder to gym owner — King grew up in a health-conscious family. Today, King balances her Peloton career, motherhood, and her second job as a DJ. “I really point to prioritizing protein as a key part of my recovery,” she told WIRED. “I can really feel the difference when I don’t.”
We caught up with King to break down the basics that keep her on track.
