What is earth light? How to spot the lunar wonder in the sky this week

The moon has been in the news a lot this month, following a successful flyby during the period Artemis II mission. You know you’re looking at Earthshine when you look at the moon, and you can see it all the way, but not as bright as a regular moon.

During a full moon, sunlight reflects off the moon’s surface and is sent to Earth, making it bright and easily visible. In Earthshine, sunlight bounces from the Earth to the Moon, then reflects back to the Earth. These multiple reflections give the moon a fainter, more ghostly appearance.

When is the best time to see Earthshine?

The actual dates change every year because the moon phases don’t line up perfectly from year to year. Groundshine can occur any time there is a crescent moon in the spring.

This happens twice every lunar cycle, during the waning and waxing crescent phases. These phases occur just before and after the new moon, respectively. The new moon falls on April 17, with the best days being April 12-14 and April 19-22.

You won’t need any special equipment to see it, but you do need timing. Earthshine can only be seen within about 45 minutes of sunrise and sunset, giving you a 90-minute window about twice a day to see it. according to When the curves line upThe effect should be strongest on April 14 and 22, so space photographers looking to get a good shot of it should be ready on those days.

If you miss it in April, you’ll have four more time frames to view it, including May 12-14, May 18-20, June 11-13, and June 17-19.
