Wizanother navigation app from Google, was announced Batch of updates This week will make it “less chatty”, encouraging drivers to talk more and customize their most frequently used driving routes. In select markets, motorcyclists will see dedicated routes specifically for travel on two wheels, and (like everything Google offers these days) it’s all based on Gemini-powered artificial intelligence The update also aims to improve voice destination search and map reporting.
Waze was acquired in 2013, and it’s here Next to Google Mapsand increasingly sharing core Google Maps data and cross-pollination features. Both, for example, are characterized by increased levels of twin Merger.
However, driving-focused Waze lacks navigation and walking modes in Maps. Overlap like this is usually a one-way ticket to Google Cemeterybut Waze differentiates itself from its sibling by focusing on real-time collective reporting (such as crashes, speed traps, road hazards, and fuel prices), rather than just aggregated traffic data. This makes Waze an interesting alternative for drivers who appreciate human-reported details that Google Maps doesn’t typically show.
All these extra details can get a little annoying when you’re just trying to focus on a good playlist or podcast, and that’s where Waze’s new “Less Chat” mode comes in. This toggle reduces the frequency and length of the app’s voice prompts without disabling them completely.
Waze says important alerts about hazards, turns and lane changes will still appear, but less often. The result, ideally, falls somewhere between my audiobook being interrupted by every oncoming speed camera and no spoken alerts at all.
New updates to the Waze app for Android and iOS will roll out this week.
Meanwhile, Waze’s new Personalized Navigation option overlays a driver’s trip history and habits over Waze’s existing map and traffic data processing. For example, if you consistently choose surface streets on a particular stretch of highway, Waze will start showing you that route first instead of what the algorithm deems optimal.
There is an underlying intelligence to balancing route allocation with the need to avoid road closures and traffic jams, but the promise is less about combating constant recalculations and more about focusing on route and route.
If the idea of Waze learning your habits excites you, you can turn off this customization in Settings.
Both the less talkative mode and personalized navigation are built on twin The integration that Waze has been putting into the app over the past year. The same core technology now also powers the app’s updated voice interactions. Conversation reports are updated to enable map update suggestions, such as road closures and old addresses, for human map editors to verify. Drivers using the new Gemini destination search will be able to speak natural language, such as “Find me a coffee shop open now” or “Find me a nearby gas station with the lowest prices” to start trips via voice.
The above features are rolling out in the US and globally Android and iOS The Waze app releases on Monday, though searching for a Gemini destination will require the beta version of the app.
Outside the US, Waze is also adding a new AI routing system designed specifically for motorcyclists. This personalized routing method takes into account narrower streets and alerts to motorcycle-specific hazards such as potholes, speed bumps, raised crosswalks and shoulder ends that a vehicle-focused routing algorithm may not identify. It is now being rolled out in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru and the Philippines. Waze says more countries are on the way, but didn’t provide a timeline for availability in the US.
