Technology has always been a key component of Pixar’s filmmaking process, but with… Toy Story 5becomes part of the story itself. The result is a timely and relevant sequel that carries the franchise forward while maintaining its emotional core.
Like its predecessors, Toy Story 5 is filled with clever humor, honest storytelling, and a cast of likable characters. I was hooked from start to finish, alternating between fits of laughter and moments of genuine heartbreak. The narrative will be comforting to those who grew up with the films while resonating with anyone entering this world for the first time.
Grounded in core themes of loyalty, friendship and letting go, the film eschews hollow nostalgia and recycled plot lines in favor of a fresh, contemporary twist. Toy Story 5 hits theaters June 19.
Bonnie, the 8-year-old in the series, struggles to understand why no one wants to be her friend or play with her. I’ve come to a painful realization: everyone prefers to stick to their gadgets. The toys that once dominated playtime have been relegated to dusty drawers and boxes in exchange for the bright, inviting screens of tablets, phones and computers.
Eventually, Bonnie got her own tablet called a Lilypad and she was immediately enamored with it. She ditches her games and spends almost every waking moment scrolling, tapping, and chatting with new friends who have similarly excessive screen time. Since this is a Toy Story movie, it’s only natural that Lilypad has a mind of her own, making it her mission to connect Bonnie with her friends online, even if it means leaving her old toys behind.
The toys are concerned about how much Lilypad is attracting Bonnie’s attention.
Our beloved toy heroes, including Jessie, Woody and Buzz Lightyear, are of course terrified by what they see. As Jessie suffers from neglect, she stares into the windows of nearby houses, each face illuminated by the glow of the screen. “Look at them all,” she says with equal parts annoyance and wonder, “all on the machines.”
It is a sobering moment that reflects the bleakness of our current technology-centric world, where real-life connections and experiences are often replaced by hollow virtual relationships and experiences.
As Woody succinctly said: “Games are for playing, but technology is for everything.” How can they compete?
The film offers a poignant look at our digital lives, exploring the isolation that grows when fleeting virtual connections replace tangible real-world connections and imaginative play.
I came to this film with the same trepidation that many people might have about its release thus far last Toy Story movie. certainly, toy story 3 It felt like a cathartic ending, but it turns out that this franchise was No plans to stop there.
However, the timing of Toy Story 5’s plot made the film resonate much more than I expected. With the rise of mobile devices among young and old, this film is a relevant and creative exploration of what happens when traditional play collides with modern entertainment. In fact, this conflict makes the franchise more culturally important than ever before.
Despite the film’s overarching theme, it’s not all doom and gloom. Toy Story 5 is equal parts nostalgia, heart, and humor.
Early on, as the toys count their imminent demise, a Tyrannosaurus rex shouts, “Extinction, not again!”
Meanwhile, Jessie thinks that her first child, Emily, has abandoned her, and is afraid to experience that pain again. A poignant rendition of “When She Loved Me” plays in the background, a callback to Toy Story 2’s heartbreaking montage.
We’re also introduced to my new favorite character, Smarty Pants, the potty training toy, voiced by the hilarious Conan O’Brien. With a toilet roll design and “1” and “2” buttons, Smarty Pants delivers simple humor and hysterical, turbulent energy that brings refreshing comedic relief (no pun intended) throughout the film. When someone is described as passing a gas station, Smarty Pants quips, “I passed gas, haha.” It’s the kind of humor that’s likely to appeal to a child as well as the idealistic inner child alike. However, because of Smart Pants’ limited and fleeting usefulness, he knows what it means to suddenly be eliminated, even if it is a digital toy.
Smarty Pants potty training toy is my new favorite character.
Instead of just the Buzz Lightyear fans know and love, Toy Story 5 introduces 50 high-tech models with small digital displays built into their chests. The New Age companions arrive aboard a lost cargo container that washes up on shore at the beginning of the film. They act as a collective hive mind, working in unison as they search for their target. Bringing these scenes to life requires Pixar to do just that Development of animation techniques Which was previously out of the studio’s reach. These scenes, scattered throughout the film, serve as a source of humor and heightened tension.
Overall, Toy Story 5 takes a slightly more restrained visual approach than Toy Story 5 A dazzling scene from Toy Story 4. While its predecessor demonstrated Pixar’s technical prowess through Intricately presented antiques A kaleidoscopic burst of color, this latest installment favors a more subtle aesthetic, from sunny pastures to noticeably lifelike animals. It’s a more subdued aesthetic, but it’s emotionally poignant and technologically impressive.
My cocoonI was also dying to hear Taylor Swift’s track I knew it, I knew you — which had not yet been released at the time of my spinoff — would be appropriate for the film. Given all the hype (no pun intended either) around it, I was surprised that the song only appeared in the end credits, and not as part of the montage. However, I appreciate the upbeat country vibe that feels like a callback to Taylor’s 2008 album Fearless, and it fits well with the overall tone of the film.
We were introduced to some high-tech Buzz Lightyears in Toy Story 5.
Along with its lovable characters, sharp humor, and distinctive animation, Toy Story 5 sparked an unexpected wave of self-reflection. The film captures the emotional and creative toll of existence Consumed by our devices. It’s hard to be creative and connected to the world, no matter our age, when devices are constantly hogging our attention and time. Heck, it was hard to write this review without reaching for my phone every half hour.
More than anything else, Toy Story 5 renewed my desire to break — or at least loosen — technology’s grip on my daily life and refocus on real-world experiences and relationships. This is where lasting achievement often lies.
This does not mean that technology has no place in our lives. After all, it would be hypocritical for Pixar, a studio built on technological innovation, to suggest such a thing. But, as the film shows, overexposure to our screens can stifle our innate need for human connection and imagination.
Ultimately, Toy Story 5 encourages us to embrace change, especially in a world where technology shapes us all. The question is how much we choose to let it shape us.
