Like many people, I have a list of potential hobbies and skills I’d like to acquire — and a track record of never actually pursuing them. Chess is high on that list. I’ve made a few attempts to learn how to play, but the complexity of the rules and strategy can be daunting, and I quickly forget everything I’ve learned.
For this reason, as huge Harry Potter fansI was excited to find… GoChess Wizard Lite A painting by Particula, which brings the famous live chess scene from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone To life – to some extent and at a great price. Chess pieces no Crush each other into piecesbut they resemble the ones in the movie, with ornate details and a heavy, sculptural feel. I feel bad storing them in their bags; They are so eye-catching that they should always be on display.
But the most amazing part of GoChess Wizard Lite is the technology-enhanced board itself. Once it’s turned on and paired with the GoChess app (for iPhone or Android), the squares glow to suggest which piece or pieces will be played. And yes, it comes with a USB-C charging cable.
The panel will then highlight your best – and worst – possible moves. A blue LED light indicates overall safe movement, a purple light means it’s vigorous movement and a red light is a warning to avoid going into that box, lest you be eliminated. This is a big help for beginners like me who are still learning the ropes and trying to remember where each piece can go.
If you are a more experienced player, you can choose a higher difficulty level and turn off any or all of these tips. You can also set time limits for the game or keep it on “unlimited” mode for more casual gameplay.
You can either face an opponent in person, join an online challenge, or play against the board itself. As a beginner, I always choose the latter option to avoid embarrassing myself while building my skills.
I love the amount of detail in each chess piece.
Board games Usually a great way to Stay away from our screens And engage in the real world. Adding a technical element to chess may seem like it compromises the analogue purity of the game, but this digital board was actually a great milestone for me. It augments the tactility of one of the world’s oldest games rather than replaces it. I don’t have to look up where each piece might go or ask my opponent for constant refreshers; I can just look at the board and see the bright possibilities. The charmingly detailed chess pieces add a unique magical touch and make me even more excited to play.
There’s a potential downside to this very useful chessboard: it can make you a bit lazy. Sometimes, I find myself relying on practice instead of putting in the effort to memorize patterns and tactics. In the end, it’s up to me to treat technical ability as a guide and not over-rely on it.
If you’re interested in getting a GoChess Wizard Lite, I hope you have a full vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank. It retails for $429.95, although occasional sales bring the price down by about $50. The palette may also sell out, but is quickly restocked. You can also go from cheering on Harry and Ron from the sidelines to beating the chess game yourself, making the right moves with a little technological wizardry.
