Thanks to Reddit, one of the best little secrets of Steam controller valve It has been discovered. Now I can’t stop dropping it, because it turns out It makes Wilhelm scream If that happens. I’ve tested it, I can confirm. You don’t even need to pair the controller with anything to make this happen.
Throughout my multi-week review of Valve’s new gaming console, I never knew it was made The infamous Wilhelm Crya sound effect that has been used in hundreds of films when dropped. How do I know he did it? I don’t drop controllers. Or I don’t intend to.
But this is exactly what the controller does when it is dropped, even lightly, on any surface. I picked up the controller and dropped it several times on my couch, from about 3 feet high, and it produced that distinctive yelp that my kids love. Check out the video below.
Random Screaming: It’s not about how hard it is to drop it, so don’t do it. The hardest accidental fall to the ground produced no screams. Two straight drops caused a scream. Then nothing for a bunch after that. That’s the fun of it.
Apparently, the screaming happens via kinetic touches on the controller, which acts as a speaker. Or is he a speaker? It looks really good, it’s amazing.
The effect occurs even if the Steam Controller is not paired with anything. I just turned the controller on, and while I powered it on to pair via Bluetooth, it was still making dropping screams, and there was no Steam Deck or PC on or near it.
In general, I do not recommend dropping $99 for game controllersbut this Easter egg is so amazing that I want all of the game controllers to make a little beep right now. What if Joy-Cons made Mario sounds? Did the PlayStation DualSense make AstroBot peep?
I actually liked the Steam controller. I like it more now.
