The White House is trying to figure out what to do about Chinese AI

The Trump administration is divided over how to respond to China’s rapid rise to leadership Artificial intelligence modelsaccording to several people familiar with the deliberations.

The debate is widely divided between parts of the White House, which has pushed for stricter controls on Chinese artificial intelligence that may soon rival the most powerful American models, and the Commerce Department, which has viewed such restrictions as unworkable.

In recent days, senior White House officials have discussed potential measures to prevent Chinese AI labs from developing their models by training them on American models, a practice known as distillation, the people say.

The White House is expected to take some sort of presidential action after Anthropic last month alleged the Chinese tech company Alibaba It carried out the “largest known distillation attack” against it to date. The action is not currently expected to take the form of an executive order, according to one of the people.

A White House spokesperson did not comment on the reports in this story.

The White House was taking the distillery attacks particularly seriously. The people add that Lutnick has considered ways to create incentives for major U.S. labs to create their own open weight models to counterbalance China, and has spoken with leaders at a number of AI labs in recent weeks.

One person said Lutnick seemed to embrace a middle ground on regulation – he imposed export controls on Anthropics to force them to comply – but he was freer than Cairncross.
