Unity is A Chinese company known for its amazing craftsmanship, Relatively affordable Robots That dancing and shuffling and so on. Last night, it unveiled its latest creation, which is something of a departure from the norm: a giant walking, crawling, transforming, wall-smashing “mecha” called GD01.
that Introductory video For GD01 – set to thunderous rock music – the company’s founder and CEO, Xingxing Wang, is shown holding the robot in his hands before climbing onto its impressive outdoor belly. A disclaimer added to Unitree’s social media post read: “Please ensure everyone uses the bot in a friendly and safe manner.”
The video cuts to a scene where there is no human pilot aboard the GD01, but he still manages to smash through a wall of cinder blocks. Unitree later shows the red-limbed robot contorting itself by bending backwards and crawling on its hands and legs. (In this crab walk mode, the human operator would be lying on his back, looking at the ceiling or sky, but honestly who cares at that point.)
Unitree is a fast-growing robotics startup based in Hangzhou, China. The company already manufactures the world’s most popular four-legged robots and humanoid robots. G1 humanoids are routinely found in social media clips dancing, performing acrobatics, and practicing kung fu. This is her first foray into giant mecha. (The company confirmed to WIRED that the GD01 was an actual product it was selling, not an elaborate joke.)
