When I first heard that Vacuum had launched a rocket-powered electric car with performance specifications that seemed physically impossible, I immediately thought James Dyson was up to his old tricks again.
Fortunately, I was wrong. This time, the home appliance company trying to create supercars is Dreame (pronounced like “dreamy”), a little-known Chinese company with big ambitions to become a global consumer electronics giant. The company held an exhibition of sorts in San Francisco this week that led to a flurry of product announcements. Because we live in the attention economy, one of the best ways to get people’s attention is to show off A ridiculous looking carDreame does just that. once again.
The first time was last January at CES, when Dreame showed a four-door car equipped with four electric motors capable of producing 1,399 kilowatts of power (i.e. 1,876 horsepower) and accelerating to 100 km/h in 1.8 seconds. As you can see, we’re already off to a ridiculous start.
Just five months later, Dreame is back with another car – and this time, they’ve really outdone themselves. The company claims that its Nebula NEXT 01 Jet Edition, equipped with a pair of “rocket motors,” can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in… 0.9 seconds.
Not only is this faster than anything ever made, it’s probably physically impossible. Modern tires simply do not have the ability to allow this type of acceleration. As long as traction remains a real concern, there is no car in existence that can achieve that.
Even in all-wheel drive, modern supercars are “traction limited.” They may have the horsepower needed to spin their wheels indefinitely, but the limiting factor is how much force the tires can transfer to the ground before they break off and start smoking. To reach 60 mph in less than a second, you’d need to exert tremendous force instantly. Your average tires certainly can’t handle that much torque without slipping. Drag racers can get close with sticky rubber and track preparation. But an ordinary street car driving on ordinary pavement will simply burn out.
Dreame’s solution to this is “custom-designed dual solid rocket boosters” that go beyond just horsepower. The company claims that its boosters provide 100 kN of force. Mathematically, this is probably enough force to accelerate the car, but – again – we need to acknowledge the physical limitations of applying that force to the road. If it’s operating in a vacuum or on a surface with infinite grip, then yes, enjoy rocketing acceleration. But here in the real world, the laws of physics still apply.
There has been some progress in sub-one-second 0-to-60 acceleration. A few years ago, a team of students at the Academic Motorsport Club Zurich and the Swiss universities ETH Zurich and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts I designed an ultra-light race car that did it in 0.956 secondsBut it weighs about 300 pounds and has no roof.
Utopia He sent an engineer to the Dreame Gallery in San Francisco To check out the Nebula NEXT 01 in the flesh, he rated it “looks like horse poo.” He noted that the rocket boosters appeared to be manufactured to look like rocket boosters. Obviously there were no air inlets or outlets, which raises more questions about how this thing works in the real world.
There’s nothing wrong with being ambitious, and Dreame has certainly expressed a clear desire to take over the world. But as mentioned before, 0-60 times A ridiculous metric to judge performance. I understand that this is a generally accepted way of talking about acceleration that most people can understand. But as automakers and startups like Dreame continue to try to one-up each other on the 0-60 leaderboard, things are quickly getting out of control.
However, I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Dreame faces an uphill battle if it wants to become a car manufacturer, despite its bogus plans for rocket boosters. The Chinese electric vehicle market is shrinking rapidly, as a fierce price war makes it extremely difficult for niche brands to penetrate.
Of course, Dreame isn’t alone in trying to sell the world on the fantastic promise of rocket-enhanced power. The next generation The Tesla Roadster is supposed to feature the optional “SpaceX Package.” Using cold gas rocket thrusters designed to enable sub-one-second 0-60 acceleration. Elon Musk promised the new Roadster would be unveiled in April 2026, but shockingly that month came and went without a Roadster.
Can Dreame beat the world’s richest man to the market with fake rocket booster technology? If a steam car accelerates from 0 to 60 in less than one second and no one is there to see it, does it even exist?
