There is a link below inviting anyone interested to apply to join the polycule – a group of cohabiting adults who are all in a consensual romantic relationship. The ad seemed almost mundane at first, inviting applicants to join a “group of fun-loving, diverse, diverse people.” The more I read, the weirder it got. The link goes to the application page hosted on an ideawhere respondents can share information about themselves, such as their hobbies, their waist circumference (in inches), and whether they are interested in being part of a “breeding group.”

Many were apparently angry at the techies in San Francisco or the concept of polygamy. Many wondered if this could be a real thing.
It wasn’t. The fliers — just 10 of them — were placed on a few columns by San Francisco artist and tech worker Danielle Egan. She admitted this week’s farce on her Personal blog.
“In my mind, I was like, ‘Oh, this is clear satire, and this is clearly a joke,’” Egan says in a call with WIRED. “I was shocked that so many people thought it was real.”
Egan has a history of such scams. She was one of the masterminds behind public stunts such as Mehran Steak Housewhere Egan and her friends turned on A.J Fake boujee restaurant In New York City for one night only in 2023, and Strivea citywide scavenger hunt that has been held over the past two summers in San Francisco. Egan, a former LinkedIn worker who is now building her own startup with a fellow Pursuit planner, says she has a huge note list on her phone with far more ideas than she has time to implement.
