Another dreams It’s like playing a dream full of art. It’s full of unexpected events, disjointed actions, and misty landscapes. The scenes end abruptly, then pick up the thread unexpectedly later. You’ll encounter statues of talking angels and fish that want to escape their home and swim in the ocean. But it’s the same uneasy, dream-like quality that makes the game so memorable.
in Another dreamsfrom Let’s pixel Developer Q-Games, you play as a man in pajamas who is aptly referred to only as the man in the pajamas. He carries a gun given to him by a man called the Wandering Soldier. In the opening scene, the soldier realizes that he is unable to fire a bullet from that rifle. But in the hands of the man in the pajamas, the gun does not destroy things but “creates” them instead.
says Q-Games Another dreams It is a “third-person exploration and action game”, but it is easier to understand the game as a series of vignettes rather than by genre. When you are dropped into an environment Dreams of the otherwhich usually occurs suddenly and without any introduction, parts of the landscape are dismantled into a collection of small, colorful pieces. When you shoot the pieces with your gun, they will freeze into objects such as a bench, a tree, a building, a person, or a shipwreck. But even then, the things in the world will still be made of disconnected pieces, giving the impression that they could all fall apart at any moment, and sometimes things actually start to split apart.
When you’re photographing parts of the world, things will freeze into things you can have conversations with, like a wandering soldier, a clown making a giant ring sculpture out of divorced partners’ rings, or even seemingly inanimate objects like a cripple contemplating the nature of consciousness. The characters speak in a halting, unnatural way and say strange things: Once, after taking a picture of her husband, an old lady said she would “make a beautiful funeral picture of him.” Each “scene” typically lasts a few minutes before the entire environment disintegrates, turns white, and the game drops you into a new location — or returns you to the main menu screen, which shows the man in his pajamas sleeping in his bed.
The strangeness of it all can make things difficult to follow. The game is often more concerned with exploring ideas about art, consciousness, and human nature than with making every moment make sense or “fun.” But it also has a welcome sense of unpredictability; At any point during my six-hour playthrough, I had no idea what to expect. I’ve found that, just like in a real dream, even if it’s hard to keep everything straight, there are profound moments that stick with you long after they’re over.
