The battle to claim the famous Claret Jug Cup begins this weekend as the men’s major season reaches its climax with The Open at Royal Birkdale in Merseyside, England.

Scottie Scheffler returns to defend the crown he took last year at Royal Portrush and become the first back-to-back winner of The Open since Padraig Harrington in 2008. The American star will need to make a significant improvement on last weekend’s showing, as the world number one surprisingly missed out on the Scottish Open.

Meanwhile, Masters champion Rory McIlroy and British star Tommy Fleetwood have strong support from bookmakers to break the US stranglehold on the tournament, with four of the last five winners coming from America.
