Why should you trust me in anger? Well, I once ran the equivalent of 67 marathons in 67 days wearing a 25-pound backpack. This is my toolkit for anyone trying to avoid pain.
Lubrication: Anti-friction products such as Vaseline or specialized balms are the best defense against chafing. Even if carefully selected fabrics let you down, generous layers of lubrication can save the day. You can’t be shy. Especially in the basement. You want to make sure you get to places you rarely go.
Go smoothly: I choose shorts, leggings, base layer pants, T-shirts, and running underwear that are either seamless or have flat seams. I always check the seams of double built-in shorts and rarely trust built-in briefs with regular shorts. If in doubt, wear your trusty underwear.
Tighten: I choose layers that are tighter and more body-containing rather than loose clothing. It may seem counter-intuitive, but fabric that stays in one place, close to the skin works better than loose, hanging fabrics that move around more.
Avoid cottonCotton is heavy and can be abrasive even when dry. When it gets wet with salty sweat, it’s a disaster for your soft bits. Those layers that touch your skin should be made of synthetic or wool fabrics. These dry faster and reduce friction.
Powder your toes: Pimples are essentially nuclear irritation and can be difficult to avoid. Powdering my feet and socks can help reduce moisture that increases the risk of chafing and hot spots.
