Nintendo had a big reveal Switch 2 On Thursday, he posted a video showcasing the new devices. Nintendo didn’t provide a lot of technical specifications, but it did confirm that the Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility for playing Switch games.
At the end of the announcement video, a slide appears confirming that the Switch 2 will be compatible with previous versions of physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. However, there was a note that some games “will not be fully supported or compatible” with the Switch 2.
Nintendo did not provide any additional details about the incompatible games and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
One game that will likely not be backward compatible is Ringfit Adventurea fitness game released in 2019 by Nintendo. While the actual game itself will likely work as it can be inserted into the Switch 2, what could be an issue is the Ring-Con since it’s an accessory that requires the Switch Joy-Cons to be plugged through the bars. However, the Switch 2 has new Joy-Cons that appear to attach magnetically. Of course, what could rectify this issue is for the Switch 2 to also be backward compatible with the original Joy-Cons.

Besides backward compatibility, the Switch 2 video showed off some other big changes coming with the new hardware. These include a larger screen, two USB-C ports instead of one, a newly designed larger kickstand that can recline more, and Joy-Cons that seem to function like a computer mouse. Nintendo is planning to hold a Switch 2 Direct on April 2 to provide more details. It will also hold in-person events in Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York, giving fans a chance to use the Switch 2. No release date or price has been announced for the Switch 2.
