Steve Wozniak shows off standard and luxury Dreame smartphones

Dreame Technology is known for its excellent range of robot and Cordless vacuumsAnd recently, Air purifiersbut was not very successful as a telephone company. That changed this week during Dreame’s NEXT event in San Francisco, where the company unveiled two new ones Smartphones: Aurora Nix and Aurora Lux.

Xinwei Change, Global President of Dreame, introduced the new devices alongside tech legend Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder.

CNET staff were on site to see both phones firsthand, though we didn’t get to do much with them.

The Aurora Nex appears to be the flagship device, with modular hardware allowing users to reconfigure it to their preferences. The detachable modules will include a fixed action camera, a telephoto module for low-light distance shooting, a satellite communications module for off-grid and emergency communications, and a smart module, likely including artificial intelligence, that learns and adapts to user behavior. The magnetic attachment point allows you to attach different units.

Hardware details emphasize the camera’s capabilities. The Nex should have a 200-megapixel full-focal range camera with 3D spatial modeling, 8K/60fps video recording, and 14-bit raw multi-frame compositing. Simply put, it’s designed for more professional photography and photo editing use cases than the average consumer smartphone.

Includes improved temperature frequency stability and reduced handshake latency for satellite voice calls.

The Nex has custom software, with Aurora AIOS 1.0, Dreame’s own operating system, running under the hood. Dreame says the software is designed to be more proactive than a typical operating system. It will have a traditional user interface, but also a native “smart mode” that should adapt to the user’s habits and initiate actions without prompting. This includes multiple modes of interaction, including touch, sound, and vision.

Lux is a bit flashy.

The Aurora Lux is the company’s luxury model and is not standard. Dreame says the device draws on fine jewelry techniques and traditional crafts, such as hand detailing and 3D engraving. To start, Luxe will have five designs.

“Outside the United States, there are people who buy luxury phones like this,” CNET managing editor Patrick Holland said. “For them, it’s like having a refrigerator with doors that can be designed to fit their kitchen cabinets, and it’s not about the brand.”

There is no information about the price or release date for either phone, so it is unclear when it will be released in the market.

A representative for Dreame did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The idea of a modular telephone is not new. Other companies have tried this, including… Motorola with Project Ara And LG with LG G5but neither was particularly successful. Project Ara was canceled before it reached the market, while the LG G5 did not achieve much success in the market, and the company eventually exited the smartphone market entirely.
