Part of what made the first two Spider verse A very fun feature to watch was how they cleverly incorporated many of the lesser-known Spider-people that Sony could legally use in their projects. Normies (read: people who don’t read comics) came to love Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen, John Mulaney’s Spider-Ham, and Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir. Sony took the films’ success as a sign that it could recreate a similar kind of magic with other characters in Spider-Man’s orbit, such as Poison and Madame Webwith varying levels of success.
Amazon Live Black spider series It’s Sony’s latest attempt to capitalize on the Spider-Man name independently of Marvel. In addition to being comedic very Loose relationships with Spider verse The show is a satirical homage to the violent crime dramas that dominated the Golden Age of Hollywood. Aesthetically, Black spider It’s an enchanting delight – especially when viewed in black and white (there’s also a color version). But the series lacks narrative substance to the point that it feels like Sony has lost sight of what made it so successful Spider-Man Projects shine.
Instead of bringing Cage back to shoot a flesh-and-blood version for mono Spider verse hero, Black spider Ben Reilly Centers – Vigilante from distance last The universe known to the citizens of New York City as “Spider”. Although fighting crime with his superpowers gave Riley a sense of purpose, the tragic death of his girlfriend prompted him to leave the hero life behind in favor of becoming a private investigator.
After five years of working with Riley, his secretary Janet (Karen Rodriguez) recognizes his uncanny ability to sense danger and his talent for taking photos, but he’s also a slacker when it comes to bringing in new clients and hasn’t paid her in months. Janet is on the verge of quitting when Riley faces a seemingly mundane case that brings him face to face with femme fatale/nightclub singer Kat Hardy (Lee Jun Lee). It’s no surprise when Reilly learns that the situation involves local mob boss Silvermane (Brendan Gleeson) and his band of dim-witted goons. But Riley is shocked when his investigation leads him to people with superpowers like Flint Marko (Jack Huston).
Very little of Black spider Feels nothing like Marvel’s 2009 Spider-Man: Black The comic series and its commonalities with Cage’s Spider verse Personality is few and far between. This could work if the series had a unique story to tell or was fully committed to being a straight drama. But Riley’s arc features many classics Spider-Man Beats – Get ready to hear great power and great responsibility again – which has already been modified many times before. and Black spider He often tends toward a kind of vulgar humor that prevents him from living up to his name.
Although the Spider-Men of each universe tend to be wise-cracking jokesters, there’s an intermittent awkwardness to Cage’s bizarre performance here that highlights why this character (or at least a version of him) works better as a cartoon character. From scene to scene, Cage plays Reilly as an old rascal who does a dubious impression of James Cagney, a smooth-talking Humphrey Bogart type, a straight-talking eccentric who lacks any sort of believable chemistry with romantic partners when they’re introduced. Cage’s Reilly is rather convincing when he is Black spider It calls him to be a sullen, contemplative man who contemplates his place in the world. But those moments tend to be short as the show continues its very predictable central story.
The cage Spider verse The character worked because he brought an atonal energy to both films that complemented their focus on the multiverse. Things like Spider-Man Noir’s over-seriousness and inability to understand colors were funny because of the way they contrasted with the chaos and whimsy surrounding him. But because Black spider The film lacks emotional and substantive detail, making Reilly seem more like a messy jumble of immature ideas rather than a fully formed character.
It’s a shame because the show He is Great and Cage is clearly having fun in this role. But this is not enough to make Black spider The show you need to see. Instead, the show feels like the result of Sony learning the wrong lessons from its previous triumphs. It is a reminder that we are still far from that Back to the good stuff.
Black spider It also stars Lamorne Morris, Abraham Popoola, Lukas Haas, Andrew Louis Caldwell, and Jack Mixell. All eight episodes will premiere on MGM Plus on May 25 and on Amazon Prime starting May 27.
