We expect everything to happen in the blink of an eye these days: news, entertainment, and of course, food. Snap Kitchen is a takeaway meal service looking to tap into ‘surprise culture’ with simple, fresh meals sent to your door every week. Snap aims to handle lunch or dinner for you on those days when you don’t want to cook dinner or spend money on eating out. You can store your weekly shipment in the fridge or freezer and heat it up quickly when the mood strikes.

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

There are dozens of takeout services geared toward busy people and many of them have some delicious offerings. I’ve tried most of the meal subscriptions so you’d have to be fairly savvy (translation: delicious) to get my full endorsement. To see how Snap Kitchen stacks up in a crowded field of meal delivery options, I sampled its meals for a week.

Snap Kitchen lived up to its moniker with meals ready in a flash, most of which were pretty decent. The portions were small, however, for the money, I think there are better options out there. But for someone looking to go for smaller portions or cut overall calories, Snap Kitchen may be the key to unlocking more time each week doing the things you love and less time searching for sustenance.

Here’s what I thought of Snap Kitchen if you’re thinking about trying out the popular subscription service.

How to make Snap Kitchen

Snap Kitchen is a meal prep subscription service that sends out weekly boxes of ready-to-eat meals. You won’t be doing any chopping, chopping or cooking at all – just heating and eating. It’s a pop. get it?

What are Snap Kitchen meals?

Snap meals are à la carte, with 35 weekly options spanning several cuisines – Japanese, Indian, Korean, French and Italian. There are also some basic recipes including herbed roasted chicken with a side of vegetables. Some meals are loaded with lean protein and healthy veggies while others are best classified as comfort food with lots of carbs. There are almost no vegetarian options, and few include seafood.

The jerk chicken with mango sauce was very tasty but the portion was too small for this guy.

while Meals arrive fresh and not frozenMost of them can be frozen if you don’t plan to eat them for the first few days. I recommend freezing anything you don’t plan to eat within two or three days, especially anything containing seafood.

I wouldn’t classify Snap Kitchen as a health-focused food delivery service but it does have a lot of healthy options. Portions also tend to be small, so if you’re looking to cut your total calories without giving up red meat, pasta, and potatoes, Snap has plenty of weekly selections. Most meals contain between 350 to 450 calories.

What I had and how I liked it

I chose six of Snap Kitchen’s meals and tried them over the course of a few days. This is what I ate and how I liked it.

Beef bourguignon with mashed turnip potatoes: I had high hopes for this meal but the meat was tough and horrible. The kale and potato mash was good, but I wouldn’t want to eat that meal again.

Burgundy beef

I love beef bourguignon but the Snap Kitchen version wasn’t as impressive.

Chicken shawarma with lemon tahini sauce: This meal was big on flavor with a great sauce to drizzle on. The chicken itself was a bit dry and that was okay.

Korean style grilled meatballs: This dish was my favorite. The meatballs were tender and flavorful with a delicious, umami-rich barbecue sauce. The accompanying broccoli still had some spring in it as well.

The sweet and spicy Korean meatballs with vegetables and rice were the best of the bunch.

Jerk chicken with mango sauce: This was another one of my favorites, with tender chicken and tangy mango sauce. Unfortunately, it was very small, and only had a few spoonfuls of rice in it which did not fill me up.

Pesto pasta with chicken sausage meatballs:The chicken meatballs were dry but still delicious. The pasta was undercooked (a good thing!) so when I reheated it, it turned out delicious. The pesto was good too, but be prepared to taste garlic.

The chicken meatballs with pesto pasta didn’t blow me away but it’s one of the best meals I’ve tried.

Cajun salmon with braised vegetables and bacon:The salmon was fresh enough. The braised vegetables (cabbage, I think) were good, if a bit overcooked. The bacon added a nice flavour, as you would expect.

Who is Snap Kitchen suitable for?

Since the meals are small, the Snap Kitchen is suitable for them Portion control And in general Cut calories. Most are under 500 total calories with many meal options under 400 calories. I prefer to eat larger meals with healthier ingredients or fewer carbohydrates. If you’re craving those heavy foods but don’t quite trust yourself with leftovers (who can blame you?), this might be a good meal delivery service to try.

Plastic packaging was mostly recyclable. It was easy to find nutritional information for each meal.

Who is Snap Kitchen not for?

Snap Kitchen is not suitable for vegetarians as there are no vegetarian specials every week. It’s also not a great choice for people who eat large amounts of food. Small portions may frustrate someone with a large appetite.

I also wouldn’t recommend this service for families since feeding three or four people with Snap Kitchen would be expensive. So, try it Mosaic foods: This is one of my favorite meal delivery services that offers family plans. Every panel It’s a budget-friendly meal kit service, which I also loved, and it’s great for families, as portions cost about $5. Although you will have to do the cooking yourself.

The Snap Kitchen meals were mostly very tasty but the portion sizes were a bit small for my taste.

Final verdict on Snap Kitchen

Snap Kitchen has succeeded on several fronts. The majority of the meals were delicious, with a few misses among the six meals I tried. The sauces were interesting and the vegetables and starches were cooked well and not overdone. The main problem I had with this serving was that there was not enough beef – I’m talking about the serving size. At over $10 per meal (for the cheapest 12-meal plan), I expect the meals to be filling, but many were not. However, if maintaining portion control is important, this might be a good subscription to try.

For meal delivery in this price range, I suggest it Fresh or Fresh and lean If you are willing to spend a few extra dollars per serving. For vegetarians and vegans, Mosaic foods It’s my top choice, with excellent vegetarian meals that cost between $9 and $11.
