It’s rare for a film to get technology right. It is rare for this film to be a thriller or horror film, as realism takes a backseat to fear and tension. but Red rooms Mostly he gets it. Nothing takes me out of a movie faster than a technological MacGuffin that could literally be magic. yes phrase “Dark web“It’s always going to look a little silly, but at no point in the 118 minutes does technology become a distraction.
It is not technology that creates Red rooms Great, though. It’s just something that could have easily ruined an otherwise excellent movie. What carries the film is director Pascal Plante’s expert tension building. Ideal speed for slow burning. And the stunning performances by Juliette Gariepy as Kelly Anne and Lori Babin as Clementine.
The film focuses mostly on Kelly Anne, a model/hacker/professional gambler who attends the trial of serial killer Ludovic Chevalier. She befriends Clementine, a lover of Chevalier who insists that he has been framed.
Clémentine nervously and loudly defends Chevalier, calling in TV shows and yelling at reporters outside the courtroom. She’s making a spectacle of herself. But Kelly Anne remains more mysterious, and her motives are unclear. Even at the end of the film, there is ambiguity about what she was trying to achieve and why.
Mystery is part of what makes the Red Rooms so captivating. The film feels unpredictable. None of the characters seem trustworthy or relatable. The world they live in is familiar, yet strange.
The film continues to suffer from this discomfort for long periods of time, making you feel tense. Giving you the opportunity to play through all the possible scenarios that can run through your head. Is Chevalier really the killer? Is Kelly Anne the killer? Was one of the victim’s mothers an accomplice? Does the prosecutor keep the secret?
The film progresses, charting a tale of kidnapping, live-streamed torture, and snuff films before reaching an unexpectedly riveting climax. Online poker and Bitcoin For legitimate drama. It is ultimately less about the murders themselves and more about the mania, the internet bubbles and the media. It almost feels like a darker companion piece to David Fincher Girl gone.
