Ryan Gosling stars in the Hail Mary project.
Hail Mary project It is the latest Andy Weir Shared for big screen access. The film is based on Ware’s 2022 novel of the same name, and is written and directed by Drew Goddard (Daredevil, The Martian). Spider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseThe Phil Lord and Chris Miller film is set to hit theaters everywhere on March 20. Ryan Gosling plays a school teacher who is thrown into an impossible scenario. He has set off into outer space to fix a mysterious anomaly that threatens the future of Earth’s existence.
If the concept of humanity’s destiny lying in the hands of an ill-equipped underdog, who must go into outer space to achieve the impossible, sounds familiar, it should be. I’ve seen a similar story appear in a bunch of Science fiction moviessuch as Armageddon, Deep Impact, and Moonfall.
It’s a cinematic trope I’m very tired of. However, I am pleased that the Hail Mary project is succeeding.

Ryan Gosling stars in the Hail Mary project.
Project Hail Mary is a collection of moving parts that, if poorly balanced, could easily fall into the arena of cliche space adventures where the above examples exist. It all works, though, and so brilliantly. The success of this high-stakes, funny and honest story depends, in large part, on Ryan Gosling’s performance as science teacher Ryland Grace.
Most of Gosling’s work in this film is on his own, reminiscent of Matt Damon in The Martian and Sam Rockwell in Moon. Gosling carries a Hail Mary for the simple reason that he flies mostly alone throughout the film. This can be daunting for an actor, considering the limitations of the set and the lack of a reliable scene partner, but Gosling doesn’t falter in the role of Grace.
In its isolation, the emotional foundation of the film is laid. Aside from the fact that there’s an impending disaster involving some star-eating amoeba, it’s the endearingly goofy nature of Gosling’s Grace that makes the Hail Mary project seem entirely plausible. Is it so? Don’t ask me. This is not important.
Through flashbacks, we get a bunch of necessary backstory about why Grace was alone in the spacecraft, his credentials as a molecular biologist, and the solitary nature of his existence outside of his job teaching Junior High students.

Maybe I should mention that Project Hail Mary is also a film about first contact. This was written as a major plot twist for the book and was a point revealed in the trailer that upset many readers. However, knowing that there would be an alien in the movie did not diminish the viewing experience at all. In fact, it has increased.
All you have to do is do a short search online to see critics comparing the film to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. These comparisons are not wrong. The Hail Mary project is fueled by the kind of Amblin-like wonder that keeps the story moving forward.
It is important to note that the element of relationship that blossoms in the space is the catalyst that drives Grace to develop from awkward underdog to focused hero.
It takes a while to get to the cute alien encounter and the story of friendship it turns into, and in an effort to keep at least some aspects of this story a surprise, I’ll just say that it takes real talent to infuse something that seems inanimate with human emotion and empathy.

Ryan Gosling and Sandra Holler star in the Hail Mary project.
Gosling may be doing some heavy lifting in this film, but there are a host of supporting characters who play a part in the backstory segments, adding color and context to the story. Eva Stratt, played by Sandra Höller, the level-headed scientist who recruits Grace for the top-secret project, is the perfect foil to Gosling’s crude joke.
Lionel Boyce from The Bear is also a treat. It gave Grace a somewhat friendly character to relate to in the government sequences. Let’s not forget James Ortiz, the puppeteer and voice of the aforementioned alien, who certainly provides Grace’s alien best friend.
I’ve talked a lot about character and performance, which is essential for this review, considering how important the emotional stakes are here. These two elements make the story details worthwhile for the galactic adventure and potential global catastrophe. Considering that this is a movie set in space, I haven’t even mentioned the amazing visual effects.
On this front, the Hail Mary Project offers some stunning scenes. I watched the film on a giant IMAX screen, which is probably why I found the scenes outside the ship so charming. Gosling doesn’t leave the ship very often, but when his character is performing a spacewalk or trying to collect those star-eating creatures I mentioned earlier, the film is on a whole other level.
When it comes to space adventures involving otherworldly creatures, the danger is usually clear and threatening. The Hail Mary project does not lean in that direction, which is an interesting departure from the genre. Yes, this is a high-stakes science fiction story, but it bucks the norm by keeping the magic and wonders of science at the forefront.
Above all, the Hail Mary Project is about the power of love and friendship – and I don’t know about you, but that’s something I think we need a lot of right now.
