OpenAI’s new voice mode arrives in the ChatGPT desktop app

OpenAI said Thursday it has updated its ChatGPT desktop app to add support for ChatGPT Voice, allowing users to speak to the app to control artificial intelligence agents and perform tasks on their computers.

The new feature is clicking OpenAI’s new family of audio models is called ChatGPT-LiveWhich it launched earlier this month.

ChatGPT Voice works with both ChatGPT Work and Codex, and can also leverage computer skills to search for websites and apps, OpenAI said. Additionally, on macOS, using Appshots, users can allow an app to access what’s on their screen, including alt text.

At launch, the smartphone version of ChatGPT Voice featured smoother conversations, with better interruption handling, but was not designed to take action on smartphones.

Thursday’s desktop update is more capable, allowing users to dictate complex commands involving many steps, and respond when ChatGPT needs their input.

In a demo video, OpenAI showed a developer asking ChatGPT to create a new thread, submit a pull request, and find the root cause of the bug, with a single command.

Users can use ChatGPT Voice in Codex from the iOS app through remote access, the company said.

Anthropic has also updated its profile Claude’s voice modewhich can tap into the company’s Opus, Sonnet, and Haku forms to complete tasks in apps like Gmail, Calendar, Slack, Notion, and Canva.
