OpenAI will reportedly release a ChatGPT phone

OpenAI’s first hardware product may be a phone rather than a phone Jony Ive’s Mysterious Tool. As reported MacRumorsSupply chain analyst Ming Chi Kuo has shared details about the rumored phone, claiming that OpenAI is “fast-tracking it” and aiming to begin mass production in early 2027.

According to Kuo, the phone will run on “a customized version of (MediaTek) Dimensity 9600,” which is expected to be launched this fall and a follow-up to the Dimensity 9500 that currently powers phones such as Vivo X300 Pro and Oppo Find X9 Pro.

The “key specification” of the custom chip will be an image signal processor (ISP), which will have “enhanced HDR” which Kuo says will improve the phone’s real-world optical sensing capabilities. The OpenAI phone could also include LPDDR6 memory, UFS 5.0 storage, and a “dual NPU architecture” to run different types of AI calculations simultaneously, such as language and vision tasks.

Kuo also states that “combined phone shipments in 2027-2028 could reach around 30 million units.” This would put OpenAI phone sales close to those of A Typical flagship of Samsung – A noble goal for the company’s first hardware product.
