Nothing The CEO says phone prices will continue to rise

Memory is now the most expensive component in a smartphone. It’s more expensive than a processor, more expensive than a display, and can account for more than 50% of your total hardware bill.

For the phone (4a), memory costs doubled between the time we decided to build the device and the time we launched it. They have doubled again since then.

I posted about this earlier this year. It’s happening now, faster than expected.

Phone prices are rising, and will continue to rise next year. Since February, new phones have been launched at a price tag of up to $100 more than their predecessors. In India, phones worth more than INR 30,000 have seen price jumps of INR 7,000 or more.

The natural instinct is to buy in advance. It doesn’t work that way. In case of shortage, memory is allocated, not purchased. You get what you were given, at the current price.

If you’ve been waiting to upgrade your device, the best time was yesterday. The next best time is now. This year’s sale season will not have the discounts that people are used to.
