I’ve tried the Mandalorian and Grogu menu at Burger King, but that’s not the right way

I would throw myself in front of a lightsaber to save sweet little baby Yoda, aka Grogu, the super cute little Star Wars baby. (Yes, I know he’s already in his 50s, but for his alien race, that’s the age of a toddler.) So when Burger King revealed menu items and meals promoting the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie on Monday, Star Wars Day, I was thrilled. Until I tasted them.

King Junior Kids Meals: Playtime

Burger King’s kids meal is called the King Jr. Meal, but if you want a Mandalorian and Grogu toy of any kind, this is it. You won’t get one by ordering themed items separately or in an adult meal.

The kids’ meal includes a standard hamburger, cheeseburger, 4 or 6 chicken tenders, mini fries, apple sauce and apple juice, plus one of eight themed games.

Toy variants (you get one at random) include two versions of Grogu, two of The Mandalorian himself, a Stormtrooper, an AT-RT driver, a Razor Crest spaceship, and a Lasat rebel Zeb Orrelios. I was hoping to get Grogu or Mando, but I ended up getting the Razor Crest, which is kind of a cool deal.

The toy itself is a plastic miniature mounted on a base with a blue plastic wrap halfway around it. There’s no movement, lighting feature, or anything special, so dare I say the games aren’t worth it? Plus, didn’t everyone really want Mando or Grogu anyway? Was there anyone clamoring for an AT-RT driver, or Zeb Aurelius?

The meal itself was terrible. Do kids really want apple juice and cider? You can choose a different drink if you don’t mind paying a little more.

I’ve seen some people on social media wearing Mandalorian-themed paper crowns. Paper crowns have been a standby for Burger King for a long time. I was not offered a crown with my meal, but if you ask, you may get one for yourself.

Menu items for adults: Blue Cookie Shake and more

If you don’t want to order a kids meal, there are several Mando and Grogu items for adults. They don’t come with toys (sorry – “collectibles”), which seems like a missed opportunity.

Place your order via the Burger King mobile app, and there’s a full section of meals in each kit. I ordered the Bounty Bundle to try everything, but be warned: it costs more than $28 at Seattle BK Domestic Airport.

The Bounty Bundle includes the BBQ Bounty Whopper (burger with Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and barbecue sauce), Grogu’s Garlic Chicken Fries with garlic dipping sauce, Imperial Cheddar Ranch Tots and Grogu’s Blue Cookie Shake, which mixes the soft serve with blue sugar cookie syrup and is topped with blue cookies. The cookie crumbs didn’t look blue, but I’ll take it.

BBQ Bounty Whopper: Pickle chip base

The best thing about the BBQ Bounty Whopper is the ranch-seasoned pickle chips, which are sprinkled very generously on it. They’re crunchy and slightly spicy, with a pickle flavour. The very mild, creamy BBQ sauce is largely forgettable, and the rest of the burger is mediocre.

Grogu Blue Cookie Shake: Want to drink garnish?

In a classic scene from The Mandalorian, Grogu steals a child’s blue cookies and eats them. There’s a famous meme of him snacking on them. (He later banned them from returning to the Razor Crest, urp!)

Try not to think about it when you try Grogu’s Blue Cookie Shake, which mixes soft serve with blue sugar cookie syrup and is topped with cookie crumbs.

Grogu’s Blue Cookie Shake is a beautiful heavenly color and tastes exactly like what I think a slushy tub of vanilla frosting would taste like. Only you know if it’s something you want to drink or not. I’m a fan of garnish, but even I can only drink a quarter of it.

Imperial Cheddar Ranch Tots: Flat and dry

There are two side dishes that come with the Bounty Bundle. Imperial Cheddar Ranch Tots are flat tortillas with a tiny amount of cheese inside and ranch-seasoned dough.

I didn’t like any of these side dishes. It bothered me that the babies were round and flat, not barrel shaped like toddlers. It was also dry and not very cheesy.

Grojo Garlic Chicken Fries: The sauce is the best part

I didn’t dig the Grojo Garlic Chicken Fries either. They’re supposed to be French fries with crispy white meat seasoned with parmesan cheese and garlic, but if you told me they were just baked potato fries, I would have believed you. It was tough and chewy, and it was hard to tell it contained chicken.

They came with a garlic sauce which was light and helped cover the harshness of the fries. I also noticed that the customer in front of me ordered 12 pieces, so people must love them.

Collectible Mugs: Hey! I didn’t get one!

Supposedly, you can get one of four collectible mugs by ordering one of three sets. The mugs come in maroon, black, green and navy.

But I drove through, and even though I ordered one of the relevant sets, my BK employee must have forgotten to hand me the collectible cup that came with my meal. Since the shake comes in a clear plastic cup with Grogu on it, I didn’t notice that I wasn’t handed an extra empty drinking bowl.

So, if a collectible mug is part of the fun for you, don’t leave the car until you get your mug.

Overall, I was really disappointed in the Burger King Mandalorian trailer. Get the blue cookie shake, and if your child loves BK food, they can try out one of the best games included. But Burger King had much better entertainment stuff SpongeBob SquarePants meal.
