I tested the Motorola Razr Fold and Razr Ultra cameras at the World Cup. And here’s the winner

What happens when you send technical reviewers to World Cup? They end up juggling multiple phones and Compare cameras. At least that was the case when Motorola invited CNET content director Patrick Holland and me to a World Cup soccer match in Santa Clara, California. Even outside the clock, we don’t scale.

We attended Australia’s match against Paraguay on June 25 at Levi’s Stadium – or rather, due to FIFA’s strict branding rules, the San Francisco Bay Area stadium. we completely I can’t figure out the brand’s distinctive logo Hidden around the place.

Since Motorola is the official smartphone partner of the World Cup – and its parent company, Lenovo, is the official tech sponsor – it was only natural that it would want to bring in some of the company’s latest products. Foldable To the game. I took some pictures on the Motorola Razr Ultra (2026) and Razr Foldand compared how they handled direct sunlight, selfies, and night shots (albeit with the blinding stadium lights still illuminating the stadium). Some differences were more noticeable than others.

Here’s how the Motorola Razr Fold and Razr Ultra (2026) capture moments from football’s biggest stage.

Camera comparison

The Razr Ultra (2026) has 50MP wide-angle and ultra-wide cameras. It also has a 50-megapixel selfie camera on the internal screen. The Razr Ultra starts at $1,500 for 512GB.

Razr Fold – the first from Motorola Foldable in the form of a book – It has 50-megapixel wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto cameras. There is a 20-megapixel selfie camera on the cover display and a 32-megapixel selfie camera on the inner display. The Razr Fold starts at $1,900 for 512GB.

As the match kicked off and the huge Australian and Paraguayan flags were raised, the Razr Ultra and Fold were turned on. Both images have similar sharpness, but note the less prominent shadows and more balanced tone in the Razr Fold’s image.

The differences are not always clear. Since the two phones share some camera specifications, shots like these look pretty similar.

Both phones have a 2x zoom option for clear shooting. Again, the fold image is brighter and the green color of the field is more vibrant.

But only the Razr Fold has a preset 6x zoom option, which is achieved by combining 3x optical zoom with cropping the sensor for a clear close-up shot.

Moving on to the front cameras, we snapped some selfies with CNET senior editor Corinne Reichert. The most noticeable difference between the two images is the brighter tone in the Razr Fold image. But the Razr Ultra adds more warmth, given the slightly darker colors it tends to offer.

With the Razr Fold, I used the external selfie camera because it’s more natural to take photos when the phone is closed. People’s gazes also look more natural when taking a photo with the external camera, rather than on the huge internal screen because it’s harder to know where to look.

Once the sun went down and the stadium lights came on, I took a few more photos. These picks are very comparable. Everything from the stadium to the bright lights to the night sky looks similar, which shows that the main cameras on both phones tend to be in the same ballpark.

There are some slight differences. I like the superior image richness and slightly more intense colors. But ultimately, the Fold offers a cleaner, more consistent overall look.

The “best” camera depends on your preferences. If you want to be able to get closer, the Razr Fold is the clear winner. It may also be your best choice if you like brighter overall images. Ultra can deliver more saturated colors, which sometimes veer into harsher shades. But more often than not, photos taken on both phones look pretty similar.

We had a good time and were able to focus on the game itself, rather than just what it looked like through the camera – even if we had some technology-centric goals.
