Last August, we launched a Grammarly agent called Expert Review. Agent relies on publicly available information from third-party LLMs to offer writing suggestions inspired by the published works of influential voices.
Over the past week, we’ve received valid critical comments from experts who worry that the proxy misrepresented their votes. This type of audit improves our products, and we take it seriously. As context, Proxy is designed to help users discover influential perspectives and scholarship relevant to their work, while providing meaningful ways for experts to build deeper relationships with their fans. We hear the comments and realize that we have failed to achieve this. I want to apologize and acknowledge that we will rethink our approach moving forward.
After careful consideration, we decided to disable expert review while we reimagine the feature to make it more useful for users, giving experts real control over how they want to be represented — or not represented at all.
We believe deeply in our mission to solve the “last mile of AI” by bringing AI directly into people’s workplace, and we see this as a huge opportunity for experts. For millions of users, Grammarly is a trusted writing assistant – always present in every app, ready to help. We’re opening up this platform so anyone can build agents that work like Grammarly — and scale from a single assistant to an entire team. Imagine your professor polishing your essay, your sales leader reshaping your customer pitch, a thoughtful critic challenging your arguments, or a leading expert elevating your proposal. For experts, this is an opportunity to build the same overall bond with users, as Grammarly did. But in this world, experts choose to participate, shape how their knowledge is represented, and control their business model. This future interests me, and I hope to build it with experts who want to develop it with us.
