GoPro announces its Mission 1 cameras, a new line of video-focused action cameras with 1-inch, 50-megapixel sensors and the company’s new in-house GP3 processor. Pricing is still to be determined, but there will be three models launched in two waves: the base model Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro will be available on May 28, and the flagship Mission 1 Pro ILS model with interchangeable Micro Four Thirds lenses is expected in Q3 2026.
The basic Mission 1 can shoot video at up to 8K/30fps at 16:9 as well as fully gate-gate the 4:3 sensor at up to 4K/120fps. It can do slow motion up to 240fps at 1080p resolution. The Mission 1 Pro ups the 16:9 and open-gate recording rate to 8K/60fps and 8K/30fps, respectively. For slow motion, the Pro can capture high speed up to 960fps at 1080p. Both Mission 1 cameras use a permanently attached 15mm f/2.8 equivalent lens.
The big draw of the top-of-the-line Mission 1 Pro ILS model, when it comes, will be its interchangeable lens mount for using Micro Four Thirds lenses – opening it up to hundreds of options from different lens makers like Panasonic, OM Digital and many others (especially with lens adapters). The lenses mounted on the Pro ILS camera will have a 3x crop factor, which will limit ultrawide use but allow for higher magnification from telephoto lenses.
Being GoPro’s newest camera, the Mission 1 family has other new features aimed at professionals, such as improved temperatures for more than three hours of continuous shooting at 4K30 or more than five hours of shooting at 1080p30. The Mission 1 cameras also have live metering, a bitrate of up to 240Mbps, a new Enduro 2 battery with higher capacity and support for Power Delivery 2.0 fast charging (battery is compatible with the GoPro Hero 13 Black). For audio, the Missions have four built-in microphones, 32-bit float recording, and USB-C audio support as well as Bluetooth 5.3. For photos, they can capture 50-megapixel RAW files or capture 12-megapixel processed JPG files, in a mode GoPro calls SuperPhoto, for something that can be more easily shared. When shooting in 8K, the resolution of screenshots is 44MP.
There’s a lot going on in this little camera. Although they’re a bit larger and bulkier than the GoPro Hero, the Mission 1 models are still compact, waterproof, and shockproof. GoPro will offer various kits with included accessories aimed at different types of shooting and filming, including a Grip Edition that makes the Mission 1s handle like small mirrorless photo cameras and a Creator Edition that includes GoPro’s new wireless microphone system. The new microphone is designed to compete with it Other small microphones from DJI and Rode It will be sold separately and will be compatible with other systems (but there’s no price for it either).
Some members of our video team got some early, albeit very brief, hands-on time with the GoPro Mission 1 cameras. Stay tuned for the preview video and full review later.
