Google launches a cost-effective version of Veo 3 AI video generatorVeo 3.1 Lite company Announced Tuesdayhighlighting Google’s renewed commitment to all forms of generative AI.
Google says its latest addition will complement the Veo product family to give developers flexibility based on their needs. The company says that the new model will cost 50% less than the Veo 3.1 Fast while maintaining the same speed. Like all Veo 3 models, the Veo 3.1 Lite will support in-video audio.
A Google representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Veo 3.1 Lite offers a variety of features, including text-to-video and image-to-video conversion, along with 16:9 and 16:9 aspect ratios, and video resolutions up to 1080p. The Veo 3.1 Lite doesn’t support 4K resolution like other models, which may disappoint content creators who create professional videos. The blog post also notes that developers can customize the video duration to 4.6 or 8 seconds, and costs will be adjusted accordingly.
Veo 3.1 Lite began rolling out on Tuesday and developers can access it through the paid tier of the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, including Google Film Studio, Flow.
The timing of this release is clear. Last week, OpenAI — one of Google’s biggest AI competitors — announced that it would shut down its video generation app Sora. Sora was a unique proposition because it was a social media app and an AI video creation tool.
Google Veo 3.1 Lite highlights that the tech giant isn’t moving away from generative media, but instead, is looking for ways to make AI-powered photo and video creation cheaper.
