A new Google AI tool may be able to translate at the speed of actual conversations, allowing you to speak more naturally to someone who speaks a different language than you.

Google revealed on Tuesday Gemini 3.5 live translationa new voice model designed to make real-time multilingual conversations sound more natural. Unlike traditional translation systems that process speech in turns, Gemini 3.5 Live Translate continuously listens, translates and speaks, allowing conversations to flow with just a few seconds of delay to mimic natural speech patterns.

The model automatically detects spoken languages and supports over 70 languages, enabling thousands of language pairings within the same conversation. Google says the technology is now available to developers and partners, who can integrate it into meetings, communication platforms and mobile applications.

What’s new in Gemini 3.5 Live Translate

The biggest change is how translation happens. Instead of waiting for a speaker to finish before composing a response, Gemini 3.5 Live Translate performs continuous, streaming translation. The result is a more fluid conversation experience with fewer pauses, interruptions, and delays.

The model is designed to fit the reality of daily communication. Google said it is capable of working in noisy environments, and is designed to handle background sounds, overlapping voices, and informal speech patterns. This makes it suitable for a wide range of use cases, including customer support calls, guided tours, classes, ride-sharing services, and live streaming.

Google also emphasizes speech quality. Rather than producing a generic synthetic sound, the system attempts to preserve elements of a native speaker’s delivery, including speed, intonation, and emotional tone. This helps make translated speech more natural and makes following conversations easier.

The broader goal is to move live translation beyond occasional demonstrations and into everyday communication. By enabling multilingual conversations in near real-time without requiring speakers to change how they speak, Gemini 3.5 Live Translate can make cross-language interactions more practical for businesses, organizations and individuals alike.
