Google faces a $1 billion fine for violating EU antitrust rules

The European Union fined Alphabet, Google’s parent company, €890 million (about $1 billion) over two separate violations of the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). One penalty is to give its products preferential treatment in search results, while another is to prevent Android developers from sending users to alternative payment options.

Google has been fined €460 million for giving preferential treatment to its shopping, hotel and flight services in Google search results. The second penalty, amounting to 430 million euros, relates to Play Store rules that prevent developers from freely directing consumers to alternative mobile application platforms.

As part of the ruling, Google was given 60 days to make changes to its policies, or face more periodic fines. In the search, it will be required to treat third-party services in a “fair and non-discriminatory manner,” while it will have to allow Android developers to freely promote offers to users inside and outside the Play Store.

“The best products should succeed because they are the best, not because they are owned by the company that runs the search engine,” said Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice President for Clean, Fair and Competitive Transition at the Commission. “European consumers have the right to have app developers tell them where to sign up for the best deals, even when the app store owner doesn’t get a cut. That’s the DMA’s promise, to protect fairness, choice and innovation in digital markets for the benefit of all European citizens.”
