Our readers love the specs. Tell me how it works. What kind of technology are you using here to determine the compass point to Olive Garden in Times Square in Manhattan?

For this question, we enlisted the help of the great folks at Glub Glub Labs who did all the hard technical details: We use an Arduino Nano microcontroller to manage the compass’s inputs and outputs. The Nano is connected to a GPS module (SAM-M10Q) which is typically used for drone navigation, a gyroscopic sensor to track rotation once the unit is locked into a north datum, a stepper motor to operate the dial, and is powered by two batteries salvaged from some disposable e-cigarettes.

Since the Olive Garden in Time Square doesn’t move (as far as we know), all of this can work offline, using encoded coordinates, the user’s GPS coordinates, and some onboard trigonometry.

We care very much about our terms of service Edge. Your terms of service are very funny and very specific (eg: “Do not walk off a cliff or into the ocean”). How did you come up with them?

Honestly, we’d never created terms and conditions before, so we were mostly imagining scenarios we might want to not be responsible for (we’ve ruled out walking into an active volcano for now).
