Despite the failure of the previous integration, Etsy is launching its app in ChatGPT

Etsy is known for its marketplace for handmade goods, but despite that human touch, the company wants shoppers to embrace artificial intelligence.

Etsy on Tuesday launched a beta version of its app in ChatGPT is owned by OpenAI. Once you contact ChatGPT Etsy appAll you have to do is tag @Etsy and submit a claim to them to generate results that can be compared or opened on the Etsy website.

in Etsy news blog postChief Product and Technology Officer Ravi Colburn wrote ChatGPT The app “provides shoppers with deeper insight into sellers’ items” and can help when nuances are important.

“At the same time, ChatGPT’s Etsy app is poised to give us early insight into the moments when Etsy is relevant to a shopper’s journey, opening the door to understanding how and when shoppers choose to use conversational search,” Colburn wrote.

In other words, while the ChatGPT Etsy app helps customers locate specific items, it also provides Etsy with information about when people choose to use both ChatGPT and Etsy while shopping.

I used ChatGPT’s Etsy app for a test run

After linking up to the Etsy app, I told @Etsy I was looking for a handmade birdhouse for under $50. She responded with five listings showing the item name, price, seller name, rating, and whether there is free shipping. There were also buttons at the top of the listings that I could click to filter by handmade, personal, under $25, and free shipping.

I found it interesting that I could filter by “handmade,” even though that was the keyword in my prompt. When I selected the filter, only one result disappeared: a DIY birdhouse PDF.

However, I received the same filter options with different claims — a birthday gift for a cat-loving friend and a Mother’s Day gift under $100 — so it appears they’re there by default. One exception: For a Mother’s Day gift under $100, the “Under $25” filter has been changed to “Under $50,” which means it will increase as your budget increases.

When I clicked “View Details” under the listing, I was taken, as promised, to the item’s page on Etsy.

Under ChatGPT’s findings, I noticed that some birdhouses are merely decorative and not functional for the birds, and that shipping can bring the total cost to more than $50. The two most practical results for birds are also listed, along with their prices and shipping costs.

To narrow down my options or find sturdy, weatherproof birdhouses, ChatGPT said I could tell him more about the birds I wanted to attract and whether I wanted the birdhouse for decoration or actual nesting.

Etsy, on the other hand, allows me to filter by physical items—those shipped from the US, different birdhouse materials and styles, specific types of birds, features like weather resistance, squirrel resistance, and more.

This isn’t Etsy’s first ChatGPT rodeo

when ChatGPT has launched its instant payment service In September to allow people in the US to purchase products through ChatGPT, Etsy was the first partner. Six months later, in March, Modern Retail, a media brand covering the retail industry, reported that both OpenAI and its retail collaborators had I backed out of the feature.

An Etsy spokesperson told Modern Retail that although the Instant Checkout integration got potential buyers seeing Etsy products and increased referral traffic, Etsy did not see a “high volume of sales.”

When asked why the ChatGPT app was launched after the previous Instant Checkout integration failed to increase sales, an Etsy representative did not immediately respond.

The future of artificial intelligence at Etsy

As Etsy continues to beta test its ChatGPT app, it’s using what it’s learned to design a similar chat experience on Etsy. “It’s still early days, but we’re iterating quickly and learning from real-world usage what’s of real value to shoppers,” Colburn wrote.

In this context, Etsy’s ChatGPT app appears to be less about increasing sales and more about the company figuring out how to design its own AI tools.
