The eighth episode of Daredevil: Born again Season 2 wrapped on Tuesday Disney Plusgiving us one of the bloodiest episodes of Marvel television yet. If you thought Kingpin/Fisk couldn’t get any more deviant, you thought wrong.
Tuesday’s season finale ended with an interesting future opening up for the series and the MCU. This eight-episode series unfolds as a violent, politically charged story that mirrors real-world events, and has turned almost everyone into a fighter of some sort. It also reintroduced a lot of familiar faces (and voices) like Jessica Jones, Brett Mahoney, and others.
Throughout the show, Matt relied on his faith, questioned his conscience, and delved into morality and justice through conversations with Karen, Jessica, or even Dex. As the end approaches, Daredevil suffers from a gunshot wound to his leg, Karen is overwhelmed by her trial, Jessica wants to help, and Fisk is more desperate than ever.
Let’s get into the biggest moments from the finale and how these threads might connect to Season 3 and the larger MCU.
Warning: There are spoilers for Daredevil: Born AgainSo avoid reading if you haven’t watched every episode. There were no post-credits or mid-credits scenes to chat about, but there was a scene worthy of this meme.
Did you almost scream, “Sweet Christmas!” also? Regardless of the leaked word, you need a basic course in Netflix’s live-action Marvel shows to get where this is headed. Luke Cage is on the scene, which is exciting.
Jessica and Luke had a brief romance featured across episodes of Jessica Jones and The Defenders, but there is nothing in the Netflix series to indicate that they were expecting a daughter. We meet Danielle for the first time in this season of Daredevil: Born Again, and it’s clear that she hasn’t seen her father in a long time.
Because there was a short conversation in Episode 7 between Charles and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) that hinted at a blast from the past, with Charles saying he was the only one who could connect her with it. for him. He is Luke (played by Mike Colter). All she — and we — learned in the penultimate episode was that he was working abroad.
The last time we saw him, he had taken over the Paradise nightclub and was dubbed the protector of Harlem and the city’s mayor. But here in his meeting with Jessica and his daughter, he says, “Work was different there.” It sounds like he was doing something for the CIA, or at least working under Charles.
Luke Cage in the Marvel original series on Netflix.
In the comics, Luke ran for mayor and set out to clean up the city after Fisk’s reign. This story also ties into Fisk’s anti-vigilante laws, making Luke Cage’s on-screen debut in tonight’s finale essential setup for a Season 3 plot that could bring The Defenders – and Angel del Toro’s White Tiger – together.
We know Coulter went viral after photos with him, Ritter, and Finn Jones (who played Danny Rand in Iron Fist and The Defenders) were posted online, sparking speculation that a Defenders reunion is coming. And because he also has a history with the Avengers in the comics, we might also get a little backstory on exactly where he’s been, who he’s been with (maybe Shang-Chi or the New Avengers?) or where the MCU could be headed. What we do know is that Alias Investigations may be back in business.
Some fans expected this to happen, and it’s finally coming to fruition. Sheila is now in charge after Fisk’s public killing spree, an endless string of crimes, and a beach bum-style exile.
Sheila has stepped back at times when it comes to upholding integrity, choosing to be one of Fisk’s henchmen to survive, so we’ll see how much of a strong leader she will be moving forward. This is important because actress Zabrina Guevara has confirmed that her character actually exists in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. In the clip, she is seen handing Speedy the key to the city.
Welcome to the MCU, Sheila. Don’t betray anyone else like you did with Commissioner Gallo.
There’s a brief shot of Charles on a plane, with Dex/Bullseye sitting next to him. Dex seemed like he wanted a redemptive arc as the Born Again episodes ended, but now it looks like he’s been recruited to work for Charles and the CIA. Remember when Charles reconnected with someone important over the phone in the first episode? That character was Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the MCU’s CIA director and the secret leader of the Thunderbolts.
In the comics, Bullseye has ties to the Thunderbolts (aka the New Avengers) or whatever you want to call them, and is still involved in criminal activities. There’s also a comic book where he rolls with the heroic Avengers. We don’t know where his story will go yet, but don’t be surprised if Dex/Bullseye appears in another Marvel movie before we see him on a TV show again.
Will Deeks be a mercenary for the CIA?
It didn’t take long for Daredevil’s actions to catch up with him after Matt revealed himself to be the Red Devil in court, and his arrest proved it. And in his cell, he smiled as the episode ended, indicating that he’s not worried about what’s next, so fans shouldn’t be either. There’s not much to unpack here, but we’ll have to wait for Season 3 (or The Punisher TV special on May 12) to see what happens when Daredevil is the defendant. Until then, let the speculation begin.
