Those using ChatGPT to answer various questions had to turn to other sources on Wednesday. At around 4pm PST, ChatGPT was displaying an error for some users. As of 4:30 PM PT, the OpenAI chatbot appears to be back up and running.
CNET employees in Seattle and Sacramento, California, reported that the site immediately took them to a blank page that read “Failed to load content.” One employee in Los Angeles reported that they were unable to use the site until they logged in and were then able to ask a question. Staff in other cities were unable to keep the site running long enough for a login to occur.
Some users saw this error on ChatGPT.com.
An OpenAI representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

DownDetector has noticed a spike in bug reports for OpenAI sites, especially for ChatGPT.
DownDetector, which tracks outages and problems with online platforms, showed a spike in the number of people reporting problems accessing OpenAI starting at 3pm PT on Wednesday. According to DownDetector, the outage was a medium-level disruption focused on major hubs in the US, with more than 3,000 reports processed in the past 24 hours. ChatGPT services accounted for 78% of the reports. The largest number of reports at one time was 788.
DownDetector is currently owned by CNET’s parent company, Ziff Davis, although it used to be It was sold to Accenture in March.
