Canonical lays out plan for AI in Ubuntu Linux

One of the most popular Linux distributions is about to get an influx of AI features. As reported VoronixJohn Seager, Vice President of Engineering at Ubuntu Canonical Developer, A post shared by Blog Monday details plans to add artificial intelligence features to the Linux distribution over the next year. As the post states, the AI ​​features “will come in two forms: first as a way to enhance existing operating system functionality with AI models in the background, and finally in the form of ‘native AI’ features and workflows for those who want them.”

These features will range from accessibility tools like speech-to-text and enhanced text-to-speech to agent AI features for tasks like troubleshooting or personal automation. According to Seager, Canonical will prioritize model transparency and local inference when adding these AI features. Behind the scenes, Canonical is also encouraging its engineers to use AI more, but Seager noted that “I’m not going to measure people at Canonical on how well they use AI, I’ll continue to measure them on how well they do.”

Seager goes on to add that AI features can help new users navigate the “notoriously fragmented” Linux desktop ecosystem: “If we’re careful about how we employ LLMs in a system context, they can demystify the capabilities of the modern Linux workstation and bring them to a much broader audience.”
