Alongside working for nearly 15 years as a tech journalist at CNET, I spent many years taking photographs across the UK and Europe, documenting much of the behind-the-scenes work for My photography channel on YouTube. I write, record and edit everything myself. in Mobile World Congress 2026Honor gave us a closer look at it Android phone conceptwhich could be a neat solution for capturing my photography trips without carrying a huge amount of gear. Tucked into this regular Android phone It’s a robotic camera module that pops up, essentially turning the phone into something akin to a cell phone DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

I want My videos To look as cinematic as possible, I don’t mind carrying several mirrorless camera bodies and a fleet of lenses and filters into the hills to shoot. I recently purchased an Osmo Pocket 3 and have found it to transform the way I work. It’s about the size of my hand and replaces having to carry a dedicated camera and gimbal. The Osmo gave me a way to shoot stable, high-quality video while driving around city streets.
But this is still not the ideal solution. The Osmo is relatively chunky, requiring a large jacket pocket to say the least. Its small screen can be difficult to use, and transferring footage from it can take a long time.
DJI’s Osmo Pocket 3 has been a very useful tool for me.
The Honor Robot Phone would solve many of the Osmo’s current shortcomings. By replacing my current phone, it will be in my pocket, always ready to use when creativity strikes. The camera module fits seamlessly into the phone so my pockets don’t bulge out in an embarrassing way. Using the phone’s home screen will give me a large screen to monitor the video while recording and review it afterward. And since it is Android phoneI can simply share the videos to Google Drive or directly to YouTube when I’m done.
Sometimes, shooting in the mountains means carrying a huge backpack of gear.
Honor also says it is working with the popular cinema company Show – Maker of cameras like Alexa, which has been used in countless Hollywood films. It’s a very exciting prospect, especially with Arri’s CEO commenting in a press release, “Our goal is to bring a true cinematic aesthetic to smartphone photography – natural color, soft highlights, and a sense of depth that feels true to how stories are seen.”
It’s a reassuring statement, as I’ve found that many Android phone makers today, including Honor, over-process images with their cameras, resulting in images that appear overly processed and unnatural. But just as Xiaomi recently worked with Leica on the Leitzphone – which I just called it The best camera phone I’ve ever used – I hope Arri’s cinematic legacy helps guide Honor towards a product that truly delivers what creators like me are looking for.
Made in partnership with Leica, Xiaomi’s Leitzphone is capable of taking truly stunning photos. Other phone makers can learn from this.
The phone is still in the concept stage yet, but Honor said it could be available for sale as soon as the second half of the year. Personally, I can’t wait to get my hands on a film and start shooting.
