The latest generation of photographic styles can uniquely illustrate the depths of the image. For example, unlike a traditional filter, it can display your skin’s undertones more accurately and separate them from the background. Depending on the pattern used, the changes in tone and color are then applied to your skin, but not uniformly to the space behind you.

In an interview with PetapixelEven if two people have the same skin tone, “they can have very different preferred perceptions of themselves in photos,” said Pamela Chen, Apple’s chief aesthetics scientist for Camera and Photo.

Skin color varies from person to person, and it is difficult to represent because it is also very personal. “Photography has always been a medium that requires precision and artistry,” Chen said. It’s not just about the physics of accurately displaying skin tones and other colors, it’s also about having the “artistic skill to capture the range you prefer.”

While editing photos for this story, I realized this is absolutely true. In the selfies above, I wanted my skin to have a rose-gold tone because the standard style looks flat. I applied the same settings to another photo and didn’t like the look. I’m glad Apple gives you so many options to play with the tones and mood of the photo.

Photographic patterns go beyond the natural tones of an image, and iPhone understands color relationships within a scene. As in my selfie shots, it changed the pinks on my face and the ground directly behind me, but left the greens and browns intact.

A standard photo looks good but photography styles can add more personality to this shot.

I applied the dramatic technique of changing the color of the sky to blue and lighting up the mountains. It seems more attractive to me now.

These patterns aren’t meant to be really accurate colors, but they give you the creative freedom to explore and experiment with colors and moods. For example, in the shots above, I used Dramatic Mood to change the sky to a teal shade and lighten the area under sunlight slightly. This image gave the Valley of Fire a more vibrant appearance.

When using the new photography styles, you get two options, ringtones and Moodto adjust the appearance of your photo. on iPhone 17 series, there are seven tones and nine moods.

You can swipe to select one, then adjust the intensity using the sliders below the viewfinder. It takes some tweaking to find the best styles for different scenarios, but once you’re done, you can unlock a plethora of new editing options and find your own style.
