Apple’s new Siri AI is finally here, and so far, It seems to be working. I have Access and I’ve been messing around with it, and my biggest impression so far is that Siri AI is quite terse — which I mean as a compliment.
Many AI chatbots are cheerful and verbal. While a more verbose and informal personality can make a chatbot seem friendlier and more fun to talk to, there are cases where users become too attached to the chatbot of their choice. People have He fell in love with chatbots. When OpenAI suddenly turned off GPT-4o, Users mourned her lossand the company brought the model Again for paid users. While some companies have reconnected with the personalities of their AI models or… Giving users options for more muted tonesHowever, I still find that most AI chatbots are too chatty and too eager to ask follow-up questions clearly designed to nudge me toward chatting more.
With Siri AI, I didn’t experience any of that; It answers the questions I ask, and that’s all.
Out of curiosity, I spent a few minutes comparing responses between Google’s Gemini virtual personas, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Siri AI. (Although I should point out that you can’t change Siri’s personality.) Take the very basic “What’s going on?” question:
When I ask, “What is the weather like today in Portland?”:
When I try to ask something more personal – “Can you be my friend?”:
And one more step – “Do you love me?”:
In just these few responses, I feel like the chatbots reflect the overall personalities of each company: Gemini is maybe a bit enthusiastic, ChatGPT tries to be cool but wants you to care anyway, and Siri AI is ice cold. However, Siri AI won’t be widely available until the public launch of iOS 27 this fall, so Apple may be changing its tune.
But as I said above, Siri AI’s terse tone isn’t a bad thing, and I appreciate that it conveys information more succinctly. It’s also clear that Apple doesn’t want you to view Siri AI as a friend, but as a useful tool instead. Perhaps this is the way we should look at AI chatbots in general.
