Apple CarPlay wasn’t taking center stage in WWDC 2026 Main Conference Monday, which leaned heavily on New Siri AI, Apple Intelligence Expands and Upgrade parental controls.
But it is buried in a dense list of changes and Developer face-to-face sessions, iOS 27 It offers a meaningful set of CarPlay updates. None of them would be disruptive on their own, but collectively they represent a real quality-of-life improvement for daily drivers.
I’ve been reviewing the patch notes and looking through the developer beta to see what’s new and coming soon.
The playback interface now finally gets audio refinement. Touch and drag the progress bar to skip a boring part of a podcast, find the next chapter of an audiobook, or access sheet music faster. It’s the kind of thing you assume already exists. Previously, you had to tap and hold the skip forward or skip back button to achieve a similar result, which I always found unintuitive.
Even more useful is the new Audio MiniPlayer: a floating disc-shaped control in the upper right corner (on left-hand drive vehicles) that keeps the play/pause and skip controls accessible even when the map is running full screen. It’s a small change, but anything that reduces the need to tap while driving is a win in my book.
The new MiniPlayer (top right) keeps play/pause and skip controls available wherever you are.
Android Auto was introduced recently Floating audio controls to its navigation screen, although the widget offered by Google is much larger.
CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra navigation apps running on iOS 27 will soon be able to share route data with and receive data and waypoints from the host vehicle’s on-board software. This opens up some interesting possibilities for driver assistance and autonomy on the road, but could also immediately improve EV path planning.
It works like this: The navigation app — Apple Maps or even third-party apps like Waze or Google Maps — creates a route and passes that information to the host vehicle. The electric vehicle looks at the suggested route, compares it to the available range, searches for a compatible charging station and passes the waypoint back to the app, perhaps with an estimated charging time to complete the trip. The navigation app sees the updated route, and you get a more accurate estimated time of arrival and a charging station you don’t have to search for yourself.
All these back-and-forth waypoints may seem complicated, but I can see how this method protects the driver’s privacy and data: the app only gets the information it needs when necessary.
Whether route or location data flows from the app to the host car, or vice versa, or nothing at all, will depend on the developer, automaker, and, ultimately, the privacy settings chosen by the driver.
In iOS 27, your car and CarPlay apps will be able to exchange information while giving you control over the privacy of your data.
Siri AI It comes to CarPlay as part of iOS 27, bringing the new version of conversational, context-aware Siri from the phone to the dashboard. The new Siri visuals use the Liquid Glass design language introduced in iOS 26 and developed further in iOS 27.
Apple Maps is getting natural language search capability, coming – eventually – as part of the Siri AI rollout. You’ll soon be able to ask Apple Maps, for example, to “go to that sushi restaurant that Nicole recommended last week,” and ask Siri to pull relevant information from texts, emails, or notes on your phone.
While we wait for the new Siri to arrive, Apple Maps will also see an improved Flyover mode using aerial photos and 3D scans for a more realistic look, improved accuracy of places visited with wider market availability, and more local guide coverage. There are improvements to offline maps as well, though details are scant.
Developers will be able to create video apps for CarPlay that seamlessly transition to audio-only when it’s time to go.
Apple allows developers to build CarPlay apps with video browsing capabilities for vehicles that support the feature. Consider catching a show while waiting at the airport or during an electric car charging session. Additionally, any iPhone app that supports AirPlay video streaming will automatically be able to stream to a compatible CarPlay display.
Using either method, video via CarPlay will have an automatic fallback mode for audio-only: If the car doesn’t support video, or conditions change (say, you unplug and start driving again), playback will seamlessly switch to audio-only, so you can keep your eyes on the road while listening to the rest of the podcast you started.
On the developer side, iOS 27 adds new app templates across categories, as well as support for Live Activities and Widgets from any app — so you can launch the Live Sports Scores widget on your CarPlay screen without opening the app.
Meanwhile, developers will have access to new APIs to create conversational voice apps, including AI chatbot integrations into CarPlay. There’s also a new CarPlay emulator built into Xcode 27’s Device Hub, allowing developers to test across different aspect ratios and configurations without the need for hardware.
With the new CarPlay Simulator, developers can test their apps across a variety of aspect ratios without purchasing a bunch of cars.
Improved wireless CarPlay reliability and better GPS address accuracy at the start of navigation improve the low profile but are welcome fixes. The former promises fewer connections made while driving, while the latter should mean fewer of that awkward moment where the car spins around the block while the app determines which direction you’re pointing.
Outside of CarPlay, a Proactive Car Key setting was listed in the iOS 27 patch notes — Apple hasn’t fully detailed it, but a likely scenario is a simplified pairing flow for CarPlay. Phone as keysimilar to how easy it is to pair Airpods. Enhanced Bluetooth power management is also on the list. It’s not a CarPlay feature per se, but it’s suitable for anyone who relies on wireless CarPlay, hands-free calling, or streaming audio.
iOS 27 is now in developer beta, with a public beta scheduled to follow in July and expected to be publicly available in September.
