Anthropic has withdrawn access to newly released AI models Mythology 5 and Tale 5 Over the weekend after the US government imposed sweeping restrictions on who can use it.
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory He said in a statement The federal government told it on Friday afternoon that it had become aware of a method to “jailbreak” Fable 5, bypassing limits that Anthropic had implemented to reduce the risk of abuse of the model. When Anthropic First announced MythosIt has only released the software to a select group of government agencies and technology professionals due to its ability to detect cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
The government imposed what are known as export controls on the products, which Anthropic said meant it had to suspend access to the two models by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States. The company said the only way to do this is to close the forms completely.
Anthropic said late Friday that it disagreed that the jailbreak that was offered justified such a sweeping measure, and that such a standard could “fundamentally halt” new frontier AI models if applied widely.
“As we have said publicly, we believe the government should have the ability to prevent unsafe deployments, as part of a legal process that is transparent, fair, clear, and grounded in technical facts,” Anthropic said. “This action does not adhere to these principles.”
Representatives for Anthropic and the US Department of Commerce did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Anthropic has reportedly sent staff to Washington to negotiate with the Trump administration to resolve the issue. The Wall Street Journal reported Anthropologie leaders spent several hours on calls Saturday with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross.
This is not the first conflict between AI developers and Washington over AI models. Ministry of Defense Anthropic declared a ‘supply chain risk’ Earlier this year after the company insisted on restrictions on the use of Claude AI models for fully autonomous weapons or mass local surveillance. The Pentagon wanted the ability to use the models “for all lawful purposes.”
