Angry parents, crying doctors: Life amidst a measles outbreak in Utah

In February, high school students across Utah tested positive after a state wrestling tournament at Utah Valley University in Orem. Salt Lake County’s shift from containment to mitigation meant prioritizing high-risk situations and loosening control everywhere else. Unvaccinated children in the same classroom as an infected person are asked to stay home for 21 days, but children in other classrooms may not be, said Melanie Crosland, an epidemiologist with the Salt Lake Department of Health. Crosland said such ad hoc strategies require a “huge” amount of effort, but they have avoided the blowback that has undermined them during the Covid crisis.

“We give everything when we are here, but the days of killing ourselves, when no one was offering us any help legislatively, are over,” she said.

The daycare dilemma

The outbreak lasted so long that some children who recovered from measles have since been hospitalized with what could have been mild illnesses caused by the common bug, said Kerry Smith, a pediatrician at the hospital in southwestern Utah. Measles can erase the immune system’s memory, weakening the body’s ability to fight other viruses. “It makes children vulnerable to getting sick again,” Smith said.

Her eyes were bloodshot, and she looked exhausted from a week of long shifts. Since the outbreak began, it has treated more than a dozen children and children severely ill with measles.

No one has died so far in Utah’s outbreak. Barring that tragic outcome, Smith and other doctors said, some parents fail to recognize the seriousness of measles, even when their children have tubes inserted into their tiny nostrils to deliver oxygen. Despite repeated warnings, doctors said, some family members of unvaccinated patients — who could be contagious — wandered into the hospital while visiting loved ones. Morris, a pediatrician who works in two counties, recalls a conversation with an indifferent father who didn’t seem to understand the need for quarantine. “I know this is an inconvenience to you,” she said. “It is also a huge inconvenience for the parent who has an infant who could be severely affected by this disease.”
