Amazon now lets you design custom goods using artificial intelligence

Monday Amazon foot A new feature allows anyone to design merchandise using AI, posing an expanded challenge to online merchandise platforms like Redbubble, Bonfire, Spring, Forthwall and others. The company announced that people are now able to create new products via Alexa for shopping using artificial intelligence prompts.

In doing so, anyone can turn their idea into a design that can be featured on items from clothing to mugs and more through Amazon’s print-on-demand service, Merch on Demand.

The service can be useful for printing one-off designs, such as T-shirts for a family reunion, a personalized gift of some kind, or for creating products with a photo of your dog, Amazon suggests. (Artists whose work has been used to train AI models may be less enthusiastic about this kind of idea, of course.)

After the design is claimed, Amazon produces the items and delivers them through Prime Shipping, the company says.

The move places AI-generated merchandise directly within Amazon’s shopping app, lowering the barrier for consumers who want to turn ideas into physical products but lack traditional design skills. While print-on-demand companies typically cater to creatives and various organizations, Amazon’s new feature could make AI-designed goods just another shopping option.

For now, the option is only available in the US, Amazon notes. This feature is free to use, as customers just pay for the products themselves.

To use this feature, customers will click on the Alexa icon at the bottom right of the Amazon Shopping app or search for “personalize” in the search bar and then click on the drop-down option. This will take them into an experience where users can describe their idea to Alexa and see the design created. Users can then edit the design by clicking on the suggested actions or by typing in changes. Results can be shared with friends or family, allowing everyone to add the product to their Amazon shopping carts.

The full list of supported merchandise includes t-shirts, v-neck t-shirts, long-sleeve t-shirts, polo shirts, quarter zips, jersey t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, tank tops, raglan shirts, mugs, and water bottles.
