In 2015, the two-person Metanet Studio was launched n++an extremely challenging 2D platformer that’s been a decade in the making, and builds on previous releases dating back to the free-to-play Flash title. n. At the time, the co-founder was Raegan Burns He issued some famous last words: “Hopefully it won’t be another 10 years before we come up with a game.” But here we are now, more than a decade later, and… n It’s getting another sequel. This time the focus is on multiplayer.
The new game is called, ridiculously, In Plus Infinity Times Two. while n++ It was intended to be the definitive single-player version of the game n According to the concept, this game is described as “the ultimate virtual couch party game with a low skill floor and no skill ceiling.” This means the same acrobatic, acrobatic action and gorgeous graphic design-inspired visuals, but now built around playing competitively or cooperatively with friends across a range of different modes. It will launch on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC sometime in 2027.
The duo at Metanet have been doing a few different things over the past 11 years. In addition to moving from Toronto to Montreal, they have been prototyping ideas for a few potentially larger projects, which they released last year 10th Anniversary Update n++. But then, Burns said, “we started running into the ‘let’s deal with it again’ bug in 2022.” Edge.
The studio operates in an unusual way, at least compared to most of the gaming industry. Although he scored two goals N+ and n++Metanet has not grown or expanded in any way. The reason is because of the way they make games: it simply takes a lot of time to find a game idea worth pursuing as a business. “We resisted doing something that would hurt our ability to keep iterating and prototyping until something good came along,” Burns says.
“It’s important to feel that magic,” adds Mary Sheppard, one of the company’s founders. “That’s what’s so compelling about the games industry. That’s when we know we’re doing it the right way for us.” Burns has a clear analogy for how they work: “We like to be in a band. It’s fun. To be in a lot of meetings and do a lot of managing: it’s not fun.” This philosophy seems particularly prescient given the state of the gaming industry, Where even the greatest results operate in a way that is clearly unsustainable.
“We love being in a band. It’s fun. Being in a lot of meetings and doing a lot of managing: it’s not fun.”
in case In Plus Infinity Times Two – Unfortunately I can’t think of a good way to shorten this title – The spark came in part from watching how younger players interacted with the games. Even when playing solo, kids usually still chat with friends on their phones, essentially turning everything into a multiplayer experience. Burns and Sheppard wanted to find a way to combine this idea with the couch co-op experiences they had grown up with, which led to a reconsideration of n Concept but with a multiplayer spin.
The two describe making n++ Such a stressful experience. If you think the game levels are difficult, just imagine that you will have to test them again and again. Part of the excitement about In Plus Infinity Times Two It was not just to find a modification to the formula that would be fun to play, but also to develop it. “This feels like we’re really having fun,” Burns says. “We’re really good at playing this instrument. So now it’s a fun challenge to play new styles of music that we haven’t played before, but with this thing we’re really comfortable.”
As creative industries from gaming to Hollywood become increasingly homogenized, Burns also believes there’s something important in doing something that stands out, even if it means revisiting an earlier idea, as is the case with multiple versions of n. It is similar to titles such as Hades II and SilkSong: An independently developed sequel that repeated a core concept, but with a new angle that made it more than just a by-the-numbers follow-up. “Being yourself is more fun and exciting anyway,” Burns explains. “But I honestly think it makes more business sense to do something that only you can do, because you won’t have any competition.”
As for what comes after that In Plus Infinity Times TwoIt is clear that the husband has not revealed anything yet. There are a few ideas for larger 3D games, but these would entail some of that expansion that the studio has so far avoided. But what they will not close the door on is returning to the idea n Again sometime in the future.
“If we can do something that says something new, or lets us see things in a different way, or gets a different perspective on what this game is or how to play it, that’s exciting,” Sheppard says. “I think we no longer believe that this will definitely be the last. We have given up on that idea. It should not be so.”
