Anna Patterson was a professional career in the Silicon Valley. Founded three startups, including the UpsTARTS XIFT search engine and UnpaidBesides Request.archive.orgWhich has become the Internet archive. She was the head of engineering in Google, and later began to include Ventures, a seed box that focuses on artificial intelligence. It did not finish the construction.
Patroson told Techcrunch that a few years ago she had itching to start something new again, but she was not sure that she had another startup. But after diagnosing breast cancer in 2023 and about working a lot from that year, she realized that she could return to her old life or start something new.
It is clear that she chose the latter: starting her new, CeramicHe says it provides the infrastructure for training on Amnesty International, which institutions can use to train large language models faster using less graphics processing unit than the “latest newer”. Ceramic claims that its model can use long contexts and work with any groups, and its goal is to help models in expanding 100 times.
Patterson said she got an idea for the company when she realized that the current LLMS building infrastructure had a lot of variables, and was very complicated to accredit institutions on a large scale.
“Whenever you try to extend the 10x infrastructure, it does not usually work,” Patterson said. “But when you try to extend it, as you know, 100x or more, you often have to take a step back and rethink it. So, I think about myself, if this is some of the infrastructure that we will nominate over the next ten years, is this how will I do that?”

This thought process was crowned in artificial intelligence in January 2024, which Patterson founded with Tom Costilo, the company’s chief scientist. Startup has been working in surreptitious condition since then, and has already signed partners, including AWS and Lambda – although it has not generated any revenue yet. Patterson says she wants to build credibility, awareness and trust with potential customers before focusing on sales.
The company recently collected a $ 12 million seed tour led by Nea and witnessed participation from IBM, Samsung Next and Earthshot Ventures. Patterson said NEA was a natural option to lead the tour due to the company’s technical ingenuity. Funding will be provided mainly towards sales and continuous development.
But after three startups, the value of the profession is the upper roles, and the years as an investor, what is different this time? Patterson says her approach to building startups has changed since she spent time on the other side of the table as a VC investor. She feels that she is now undergoing time compared to time when her first few companies were built.
She said: “When I was the younger construction companies, I felt it, I mean this is sad, but I felt this comfortable time as a fair engineering company management,” she said. “Now, as you know after I have been VC for several years, I definitely feel more pressure.”
She believes this is good, saying it’s best to get your product in front of customers early and get comments and repetitions.
This is likely to be a ceramic because it is not the only company that looks forward to helping institutions to expand their basic models.
One of its biggest competitors Together, Amnesty InternationalWhich also looks forward to assisting companies on “Turbid’s charge” for building their own models, and has raised more than $ 530 million in investment capital. Mosiacml The LLM building also targeted the accelerated building and raised $ 37 million before obtaining it by Databricks in 2023 for $ 1.3 billion.
Currently, Ceramic cut her work if she wanted to descend as a place for himself in this fast -moving market.
