Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip 8 phone on Wednesday during the company’s conference Unpacked eventis launched with The higher prices we expectedalong with some welcome tweaks to its design and software that could make the phone easier to use.
I demoed the $1,200 Z Flip 8, and while that’s a $100 bump from last year’s starting price Z Flip 7 For the same 256GB storage capacity, the phone is noticeably lighter and thinner than previous iterations. Samsung says that at launch, the 180g Flip 8 will be the lightest foldable phone on the market. When unfolded, the phone is 6.1mm thick, which is noticeably thinner than the Z Flip 7 (6.8mm). Motorola Razr Ultra (7.2 mm).
But I’m most impressed by a number of software tweaks made to the Z Flip 8 that make it easier to use while closed. For starters, you can now add apps to the Cover Screen by swiping up on the app drawer and tapping “Add Apps” to access any app installed on your phone. Previously, you had to dig through different settings menus to do the same thing. This is also much closer to the latest Motorola Razr Phones allow you to use any application you want on their cover screens.
The Z Flip 8’s cover screen also gets a “Recent Apps” shortcut button for the first time — which is strange, since quick task switching is a core function on the rest of Android. When I’m testing foldable phones, I’m most likely to be on the cover screen using Maps to get transport directions while playing music and texting friends – this simple button means I can now switch between these devices directly without having to return to the lock screen. This is also a feature already available on the Razr.
The Z Flip 8 carries many features that first appeared on Samsung phones Galaxy S26 Telephone Line – For example, this foldable camcorder includes Super Steady technology with horizontal lock for easy movement while shooting. And I had a lot of fun playing with a new camera feature called My Fan Cam, which uses Galaxy AI technology to identify subjects in the video and create a clip that follows just that person throughout the recording, as if the camera were focused exclusively on them.
The Flip 8 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Generation 5 For the Galaxy – it’s the same custom version of the processor used for the Galaxy S26 phones as well as its more expensive foldable siblings, the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, which were also announced at Unpacked.
Other specifications continue from last year’s Z Flip 7, including a 6.9-inch inner display and a 4.1-inch cover display. The same goes for the cameras, which are a 50MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10MP selfie camera. The phone has a 4,300mAh battery and the 25W max wired charging speed and 15W max wireless charging speed are also the same. We’ll have to see when testing the phone if the newer processor is efficient enough to improve overall battery life.
The Galaxy Flip 8 is available in four colours: pink, graphite and cream, as well as mint as an online exclusive. The phone goes up for pre-order today and will go on sale on August 7.
