Nintendo held its big reveal of upcoming Switch and Switch 2 games on Tuesday, and the big surprise was, for once, not a Nintendo game. Kingdom Hearts 4 debuted a trailer during the show. However, Nintendo has not revealed the exact release date for this game.
Overall, the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer didn’t reveal much about the game. A mysterious character spoke at the beginning, and then there was a series of combat outtakes featuring the series’ protagonist, Sora. There were also a montage of other characters, including a short clip featuring Sora’s companions Donald Duck and Goofy.
What’s a bit surprising is the absence of Disney characters other than that duo. The Kingdom Hearts series is developed and published by Square Enix, but is a partnership between the company and Disney, allowing for a wide range of use of its characters during the game.
Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer
The game’s official story, which was introduced Tuesday via a Nintendo press release, is that Sora ventures to the mysterious city of Quadratrum. There, he will encounter new characters and develop new powers while exploring different worlds.
A release date for Kingdom Hearts 4 has not been mentioned, which could mean that it may be some time before it launches. The trailer only mentioned a Switch 2 version of the game, but it’s likely that the game will be released on other platforms as well.
Kingdom Hearts fans waited six years after Kingdom Hearts 3 was announced before it was released in 2019. After the announcement, Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura said that the game’s reveal was too early, because development was barely underway. The game has had multiple setbacks, resulting in delays and, at times, extended radio silence by Square Enix upon its release date.
Kingdom Hearts 3 has finally been released, and is now being re-released, along with the other games in the series, on Switch 2, sort of. On the original Switch, Square Enix released the Kingdom Hearts Collection featuring all three games, but it can only be played on the cloud due to the Switch lacking the graphical power to run the games properly. Square Enix has revealed a lineup of Switch 2 games, this time without the need for the cloud.
The Kingdom Hearts Collection for Switch 2 will include Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 plus 2.5 ReMix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts 3 plus ReMind DLC. The collection will launch on October 8 for $75, according to Square Enix game listing.
