Microsoft is coming for king AI image generator The game, on at least one measure, was not missed. The company on Tuesday launched two new text-to-image models, named MAI-Image-2.5, as part of a series of next-generation AI models. But how does it compare to the gold standard in image generation? Google Nano Banana?
When you think of Microsoft and its AI offerings like Copilot, you probably don’t think of creative work. The capabilities of these two new models – the regular 2.5 and the faster Flash model – are designed to change your mind.

“They give you precise editing with incredible control and consistency,” Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleiman said during Tuesday’s Build keynote. “Flash is here for ultra-efficient production workloads, while Version 2.5 gives you maximum precision and professional performance.”
Accurate AI image editing is important for professional or corporate work. Here’s an example shared by Microsoft of how its new model adjusts images.
These are two of seven new models of artificial intelligence that Microsoft revealed at its conference Build developer conference Tuesday. It also released its first “inference” model, called MAI-Thinking-1. (The inference model is designed to spend more time and perform more iterations on the response, ideally to generate a better answer or solve a more complex question.) New generations of audio and transcription models were also introduced, along with a codec model optimized for playback on GitHub, also owned by Microsoft. We also took an in-depth look at how Microsoft sees the future of computing, and — spoiler — it is All about Agent Artificial Intelligence.
The new image template is now available in PowerPoint and the Foundry enterprise marketplace, and is now rolling out to OneDrive.

When it comes to AI image making, Google Nano Banana It has dominated the creative AI space since its launch in 2025. And that’s for good reason – its capabilities are industry-leading, even as it’s powerful A deluge of regression and deepfakes. That’s why it was a surprise to hear Microsoft announce that its new photo model had beaten the Nano Banana in one key way.
Microsoft’s MAI-Image-2.5 is better at editing images than the Nano Banana 2, according to the criteria shown in the image. Leaderboards in the AI arenaa popular measurement tool for artificial intelligence models. But Microsoft only took home the silver medal: OpenAI gpt-image-2 It currently ranks first.
However, the usefulness of an AI model is not determined solely by one criterion. Accessibility plays a big role as well. One simple question will determine which will be more useful for you: Do you use PowerPoint or Google Slides? The ease of access to Microsoft’s and Google’s AI models will influence which model you end up using. If you are using your AI images for commercial use, you will need to make sure you obtain the rights, which may depend on whether you are using the AI on an enterprise plan or an individual plan.
