It was Zoox’s boxy robotic robot Wandering the streets of San Francisco for almost a year, and eager viewers can now climb aboard the ship. The company said Tuesday that it is allowing members of the public to exit its waiting list and into its self-driving vehicles that roam the city.
San Francisco is the second location that Zooxan Amazon subsidiary, opened its ride-hailing service, after September Launching in Las Vegas. As part of what Zoox calls its Explorers program, early riders can use the service for free and share feedback before it opens up to the wider public. In San Francisco, Zoox’s service area includes most of SoMa and the Mission and Design District. You can join the waitlist by downloading the Zoox app at Google Play or Apple App Store.

“Zoox has been testing our autonomous technology in San Francisco since 2017,” Zoox CEO Aisha Evans said in a statement. “It’s our home. A city of innovation and progress, with a great mobility ecosystem that we feel Zoox can really complement. We’ve seen incredible interest in Zoox in this market and are excited about this first step in bringing the purpose-built robotics experience to even more people.”
Zoox’s robot looks completely different from any other vehicle on the road. It is symmetrical and bi-directional (meaning it can drive in any direction), and has no driver’s seat, steering wheel or pedals. Instead, there are two seats on each side that move towards a wide center – useful when you need extra legroom. I took an early test ride in Las Vegas last year before Zoox opened to the public. Despite the unique design, I adjusted it quickly, and it ended up feeling more like a normal ride.

Along with San Francisco and Las Vegas, Zoox’s robotaxis have been circling around Foster City, California, where the company is headquartered — but those rides are not yet open to the public.
The company is also operating a test fleet of modified Toyota Highlander Hybrid vehicles with a safety driver behind the wheel in other locations including Seattle, Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Austin, Texas. These test vehicles contain the same sensors (including sensors, radar and cameras) as robotaxis, and are used to map areas and ensure the software is ready for autonomous flights.
last week, WaymoThe self-driving arm of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, It expanded passenger service To extend across more than 260 square miles of the San Francisco Bay Area. Its vehicles, which have been updated and updated Jaguar i-Pacethey can now drive on the freeways of San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles. The San Francisco Bay Area will be too Launch site to Self-driving partnership between Uber, self-driving car company Nuro, and electric car maker Lucid late next year.
You can download the Zoox app to ride in San Francisco and Las Vegas.
You can download the Zoox app at Google Play or Apple App Storethen join the waiting list. Zoox will invite people from this waiting list to join the ride. “Passengers will be allowed to exit the queue based on waiting criteria such as location and the introduction of additional automated taxis to the fleet,” he notes. Eventually, the queue in San Francisco will be removed and the entire public will have the option of welcoming the ride.
You’ll be able to go to any designated point within Zoox’s service area, which in San Francisco includes most of SoMa, the Mission and the Design District. You can either enter a street address, drop a pin for your destination, or choose from the points of interest suggested in the app.
Zoox will drop you as close to your endpoint as possible, and will also display walking directions, if necessary, to guide you to your final destination.
Initially, the rides will be free as Zoox receives feedback and expands its offerings. It’s not clear how much the trip will cost once the company gets regulatory approval to charge passengers. But as a point of reference, rides in San Francisco with competitor Waymo are often comparable or slightly more expensive than a human-driven Uber or Lyft ride, depending on location and time of day.
Zoox is clearly gearing up to ramp up its fleet launches. In June, the company unveiled its new product A 220,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Hayward, California, which can operate about 10,000 robotaxis a year.
